The Great Ongoing Revolving Speakership of the 118th Congress {Mike Johnson is new speaker as of 2023-10-25}

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy announcing today that he’ll retire at the end of this month:

I feel like more and more Republicans are…leaving a sinking ship? Or just realizing there is no future for them in the current Republican party?

“…to serve America in new ways.”
Nice turn of phrase there. If he ever serves anything but his own bank account, I’ll be shocked.

Yeah, time for him to write his book now.

It must be mentally exhausting to consistently balance between being a rabid MAGAt to win primaries, a normal conservative to win general elections, a kool-aid drinking follower of the orange jesus to keep the right wing crazies off your back, and a person who actually tries to make policy and laws that will pass. Throw in a desire for leaving behind a legacy other than that of an ass-kissing brown-nosing toady and you’ve got a real recipe for a mental breakdown.

What will that bring the majority number down to? They can only lose 2 or 3 members to carry a vote?

UPDATE: George Santos announces move to Bakersfield.

/joke

I forgot my family lived near the district McCarthy was from. Even worse, another family member I have was so proud years ago to have the Speaker of the House be their own representative.

It was Dennis Hastert.

When McCarthy leaves, the margin will be 2. He will certainly be replaced by a Republican but the Santos seat could reasonably go either way.

So far, nearly twice as many Democratic Representatives have announced their retirements than Republicans.

Things are going great, guys!

“…to serve America in new ways.”

Trump running mate?

It’s a cookbook!

Damn. That did not age well did it…

The revolution eats its own.

Not literally.

Yet.

Looks like that came out in 2010? Back then they probably thought they were being oh so provocative. How quaint!

Thank you! I’ve already stolen that line.

What’s Paul Ryan doing now?

“…Open wide, Donald, here comes the choo-choo train!..”

Except most of the Dems retiring are to run for Senate. Leaving out those retiring to run for a different office, it’s 8 Dems vs 7 GOP (+ McCarthy)
