The Great Sitcom Battle, Female Characters, {choose your favorite} Round 1

It hurt to be forced to choose between Liz Lemon and Dee Reynolds, and between April Ludgate and Carolyn Knapp-Shappey.

The rule I followed was, I had to either be somewhat familiar with both, or to like one of them enough that I strongly suspect I’d vote for her even if I had been familiar with her opponent.

Yep, Joy is hilarious!

Also, I have to ask why you didn’t include ANY of the female characters on either The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother? Those were both extremely popular shows, and both had integral female characters in their ensembles.

I might have chosen Amy Farrah Fowler, though I’ve come to dislike Mayim Bialik. I never watched How I Met Your Mother.
(were you addressing me? I’m not sure)

He did a pre-poll thread asking people to name their top 5, and then took the top answers from that. TBBT and HIMYM characters must not have made the cut.

If you’re curious, Lily and Robin from HIMYM each got a single nomination, as did Amy and Penny from TBBT.

mmm

Probably just reflects our age; I was thinking that it was a bit strange that Maude, Mary Tyler Moore, Soap, Get Smart and MASH were on there, and a bunch of newer sitcoms didn’t make the cut.

I’m not even old enough to have seen some of those first-run, and I’m 53.

I nominated Amy in the other thread, and thought it was seconded. I have no strong opinion on Mayim Bialik, but Amy was a great character.

I just checked and you are correct, Amy FF was seconded.

Unfortunately, the seconding came in too late to make the cutoff.

mmm

When I saw the first thread, I rally gave it some thought. Maybe it’s my nature to be non-conformist, but I was trying to think of characters that struck me as great and memorable, but are seldom mentioned and appreciated by others. Jessica Tate, from Soap was the first one I thought of. Strange, in a way, since ditzy characters don’t usually do anything for me, but Katherine Helmond just payed her so well that it worked.

Someone else here mentioned Karen from Will and Grace. The few times I watched that show I found that character very annoying, but I like Megan Mullaley and give her huge respect for playing that role as over-the-top as she did.

I almost nominated Emily Hartley, from The Bob Newhart Show. Great character on a great show, but very much the calm center in a show full of eccentrics, and didn’t get enough chances to be funny on her own.

It’s complicated. I don’t think any of my faves will make it to the second round.

I think we have enough to move on.

Round 2 is here.
