Fur is flying out of stores, and increasingly it’s on the backs of men.

Outside it’s freezing, but David Travis, wrapped in a $4,500 three-quarter-length black mink, is toasty and trendy.

“It’s what I always wanted,” Travis says. The North Philadelphia medical assistant pivots to the right and to the left at the First Union Center, showing off his pricey outerwear during a Sixers game.

“You only live once, and this is what everybody is wearing. It’s fashionable. It’s what is in,” he says.

Since it became fashionable and in a couple of moths ago, it is what I have wanted to own. But only since then. Before that, I never would have bought one. Heck, I thought a “fox” was simply a make believe animal or a description of a female in a Hendrix song. Thankfully, this trend that involves ridiculous clothing at ridiculous prices came along and helped me move past leather jackets, parachute pants, Reeboks with air pumps built in, Hawaiian shirts, stone-washed jeans, and sweater vests. Those can now all be safely relegated to the back of a forgotten closet. But this coat, ah yes, this coat and my love for it shall last a lifetime.

Or at least until I hear that bandanas covered in pictures of cartoon characters are sweeping the fashion lemming scene.
