The Hallmarks of Pulp Fiction

One of several things that makes PF a great film is that it incorporates a handful of hallmarks, archetypal characters and ideas, from other films. These include:

[ul]
[li]Two lovers on the run from the law[/li][li]The mcguffin[/li][li]The crime boss, his henchmen, and his professional (The Wolf)[/li][li]The boxer who refuses to throw a fight and acc. kills someone in the ring[/li][/ul]

I know of the more famous films Tarantino draws from for the examples above-

for number 1: Bonnie and Clyde, Breathless, Badlands (probably not)?; Tarantino himself was very interested in the concept, having written True Romance and Natural Born Killers (which was based on real life, I know).

for number 2: Hitchcock invented the term for crime films. Tarantino is drawing from crime films.

for number 3: Just about any crime film, correct? But I’m unsure… I assume a lot of film noir, like Maltese Falcon and the great ones, and others

for number 4: On the Waterfront, The Quiet Man, Raging Bull. RB is based on OTW to begin with.

Please add to numbers 1 and 4 b/c I know there are more and I know these icons of film are very significant. And it will help me app. PF more.

The “refusing to throw a fight” trope probably was used in dozens of films, including many that aren’t dramatic (like Movie, Movie). I believe Golden Boy used it back in 1939, and it certainly dated from much earler. It’s a real cinema cliche, so much so that when Mad Magazine published “A MAD Look At Old Movies,” that was one of the plots.

Requim for a Heavyweight, Body and Soul, and The Set-up all use the plot.

And how is Raging Bull based on On the Waterfront? RB is a biography of a fighter; OTW, though based roughly on actual events, is fiction, and the Terry Malloy character, AFAIK, is fictional.

No, RB isn’t based on OTW- but it does pay tribute to the film in some ways, with the famous speech at the end and in concept. So in that, to say Tarantino drew from Raging Bull is off- he was drawing from On the Waterfront more than anything.

I’ll add Rocky to this list, not b/c he refuses to throw a fight or kills anyone, but b/c it’s another example of a great boxing film, one that adds to the concept of THE BOXER as a film icon, right? Let’s hear more films about boxers that are noteable, and some about LOVERS ON THE RUN FROM THE LAW. I’m sure there’s more than what I’ve listed, :frowning: ?!

Oh, I thought this thead was going to be about greeting cards with “Bad Mother Fucker” on them. Or maybe precious little figurines of Uma Thurman with a syringe protruding from her chest.

Hallmarks from Pulp Fiction: When you care enough to send the very best to every motherfucker in the room, accept no substitutes.

(Okay, I think that’s actually a line from Jackie Brown, but it’s the only thing I could think of.)

Hallmarks from PF: There’s no better way to say “thanks for storing my dead nigger. You a Bad Mother Fucker.”

Either of which I would buy.

Although the best Hallmark is the one we use at work when anyone is off sick:

We heard a rumour
That you’ve got a tumour.
Get well soon.

Not so effective if the person has cancer though.

My name’s Pit
And I’ve had enough of this Hallmark card shit
So pretty please, with sugar on top, answer the fucking post

But seriously, I’ll add a movie called Series 7: The Contenders to the list of movies with the TWO LOVERS… It’s not a great film, and it’s not well-known at all- it’s incredibly low budget, shot on digital- but I like it b/c it has two star-crossed lovers who try to flee from THE LAW. How bout some more?

#2 lead to the double McGuffin!!

I don’t get what you mean- are you referring to the movie by that name, which I just looked up, or what are you referring to?

This is what I get for posting a Cafe question before Fri/Sat- I know enough about SD to know, I think, that the Cafe people come out on the weekend mostly. Either that, or there really aren’t that many noteable movies with LOVERS ON THE RUN FROM THE LAW, which is fine too.

Mmm, Sausage McGuffin With Egg…

Top of the page to ya!
