The handy depreciation society

Check out the brilliant contribution to this thread:

Congratulations are due for post 8413. I’m sure Handy will be feted and celebrated when he reaches the 10000th post.

“Humans are meat. Uneaten meat. However, if a lion eats a human, does that mean said lion has 150lbs of undigested red meat in it’s stomach?”

A profound contribution to the fight against human ignorance. I never really thought much about humans as meat before, let alone “uneaten meat”. A whole new way of thinking has been opened up to me. Sort of “Hannibalism”.(By the way, that should be “its” and not “it’s” Handy.)

I’ve never flamed anyone in the pit before, so I’m due, and Handy is special.

Handy, I’m always delighted to observe signs of individualism and I don’t think you do any harm, so carry on as you were, with my total respect for your freedom. But don’t have any delusions about respect for your contributions to this board.

Er, ummm, I actually kinda enjoyed hearing him say that. I thought it DID open a whole new direction for the thread to go in, derailing it mercifully off the Snopes UL track.

I agree, I think Handy is special. Now, boys and girls, let’s all sing the Mr. Rogers “You Are Special” song. “You are my friend, you are special…”

handy you godless man-whore!

Just kidding. I like the guy. For every time he irritates me or pisses me off, he makes me laugh six or seven times. Yeah, he’s prolific, but nobody holds that against iampunha, do they? Oh, wait, I do.

Bah on dogpiles!

Socrates was a “gadfly.” handy, good sir, is no Socrates.

Handy? Bah, he’s not that bad.

Now that Silo guy, he’s annoying.

Gotta admit, I find it a little pointless is that handy’s approach seems to be posting for the sake of posting.

I mean, what’s the point? Sure, he’s got a ka-billion posts, but who cares? If it means that much to him to have so many posts then let him have it. It’s a little sad, that’s all.

Hey, it’s no skin off my neck if that’s what he lives for. I have real goals to focus on.

I don’t think handy posts because he likes the look of his own words (or, the sound of his own voice; which, of course, is inappropriate considering his deafness).

I think he’s like peace (remember him?): a pot stirrer, full of non-sequiturs and mis-information. And, because he has such a high post count, people might actually take him seriously.

My gripes with him aren’t personal, although he seems to have an excessive interest in Anniz. But, hey, even my grandfather fell under her spell when he met her, so I can understand that.

His comment on Galludet, though, is unconsionable, and demands an apology. He has no plans to do so, nor to visit this thread. That’s just sad.

Really? Well, with the physical similarity to Jodi Foster in one early photo of Anniz we all saw, it would not be surprising if a few Dopers tried to impress her by trying to assassinate…well. Just be worried if he starts sending poetry written on prison toilet paper with ashes and blood…

I hadn’t noticed, but in retrospect I think I see your point.

I have no problem with handy. As for some of you others, ah, to be young and easily offended again!

I’m with Homer. I got no quarrel with handy.

When most of us read a post, we automatically and unthinkingly translate it to speech in our minds, complete with a tone of voice implied by word connotations and syntax. I’ve seen handy say that he doesn’t work that way when he reads a post, because he’s deaf, and doesn’t operate in the same context when reading the written word. Yeah, he’s insensitive, but in this case that word is to be taken in a descriptive rather than pejorative sense. He’s never actively been a dickhead.

His Galludet comment certainly was in poor taste, on its face, but upon reading his explanation, I have to say that if anything, he’s ultimately guilty only of jumping about nine steps in his own thought process and then just posting the result. Should he be clearer? 'Course; non sequitur and implication are a lousy way to get your point across. Should we break out the pitchforks and torches on him? Nah. But then, I’m a big wuss anyway.

I’m sorry, but handy can type the same as any of us here. Being deaf has NOTHING to do with it. That was a TASTELESS comment, and it was FUCKING inappropriate.

And drop? Forgive me for being “easily offended” that someone would joke about some being MURDERED. WHAT was I thinking.

Actually, I consider Handy to be sort of like the unofficial SDMB mascot. I mean, give 'im a little blue hat and overalls, and he’d be so gosh-darn cute

What was this thread about…?

handy, if you are reading this thread:

h-e-r-p-e-s. Pronounced “her-pees.” Not “herphes”, which would be pronounced “her-fees.” No “h” after the p.

Just as an impartial observation…two of my good buds are deaf; one totally from birth, the other profoundly since age 6. Note: this makes a real difference in how language(s) are internalized and how cultural identities are formed. Deaf culture is amazing rich–and diversified.

The deaf “community” is unique in their approach to mainstream society. Deafness surely doesn’t mean unanimity, hence the qualifier on “community”. Some maintain their world of silence is more than compensated by the pure beauty and subtlety of their own means of communication. Others incorporate spoken language by varying degrees.

Two close friends (married; met at Gally) aren’t proof of anything. But they–and the random deaf deaf acquaintances I’ve made–share one outstanding charateristic: they’re prouder than hell. It’s the disabilty that ISN’T. Whether they lipread, sign or whatever, don’t ever even suggest they’re in any way disabled. Expressiveness and language are in no way limited to sound–and they’ll politely smack the snot outta ya for assuming differently.

People are individual. How handy relates is his choice. Deafness is an issue only to the degree he chooses to make it one.

What handy posts reflects on himself alone–as is proper and fair.

Veb

Okay, even taking in what Veb and Lux Fiat have said about the internalization of language and creation of one’s own “voice” (I’m paraphrasing; feel free to call me on it if I’m misinterpreting), handy comes off to me as quite the dick.

Yeah, I may be adding inflections that he didn’t intend, but I’m not imaginative enough to see how some of these things can come off as anything but rude. Just a sampling of threads from the last 10 days.

Whatever this is, it sure as hell isn’t polite.

And on a different note, he had the following post from this thread that still confuses the hell out of me.

Oh, he also gets my vote for most inappropriate screen name, as damn near none of his “advice” is very handy at all.

Second runner up, by the way, is Crunchy Frog who, as rumor has it, is neither crunchy, nor a frog.

Okay, I’m officially a genius. Sure! Give the deaf guy a spelling lesson based on phonics and pronunciation! That will work! How sensitive of me! :o

I always assumed it was due to the fact that he communicates with his hands, via ASL. [sub]Not that you could call what he does HERE “communication”, as he does a damn poor job.[/sub]

Being deaf is no excuse for being an asshole. Just as it would be rude to move to Japan and never learn the language, it’s rude for handy to not make an attempt to interact coherently here.

Tons of people jumped all over peace and bjorn for being incoherent; why should handy get off easily? Because he’s deaf? Feh.

Stop treating him like he’s handicapped, he certainly doesn’t think so and only trots that out when he thinks it will benefit him.

Well, if it’s any consolation, it’s better advice than 99.9% of the dreck handy posts…

I still maintain my position that handy is a stand-up guy. The majority of the posts here are “he doesn’t help a lot” and “he’s blunt”.

Big fuckin’ deal. Half of the posters here fit that criteria.
