The Hangover vs American Pie et al.

I saw this last night, and I thought it was really funny. It almost reached American Pie funny, but not quite… but still very funny.

Anyway, I’ve heard some people watch this movie multiple times. Why would you want to do that? I mean you already know the mystery of where Doug is the second time.

Also, give me your opionions on the comedy level of this movie vs SuperBad, American Pie, and Sideways.

I would rank them from most to least funny this way:

American Pie,
Hangover,
Sideways,
Superbad.

Your input?

You left out 40 Year Old Virgin

I say:

The Hangover
40 Year Old Virgin
American Pie
Superbad
Sideways

Hello…

I would re-rank that

The Hangover
SuperBad
Sideways
American Pie.
I was BEGGING!! my partner to take me back to The Hangover again today (he hasn’t seen it). But he doesn’t believe in “wasting a movie on comedies”. Go figure. So planning on catching it again next weekend- yes I know what happens to Doug, but will enjoy watching the characters suffer and make great laughs again anyways.

The 40-Year Old Virgin
Sideways
Superbad
The Hangover
American Pie (which I found inexplicably popular, preposterous overrated, and largely unfunny)

I was saying to someone only days ago that American Pie is arguably the worst movie I have ever seen. I was watching it on DVD and about 3/4 of the way through it I realised that I had not laughed once. Of course from that point on I didn’t laugh. Like I said it wasn’t offensively bad it just played to me like a drama about a bunch of lame teens in which they said and did things to amuse the other characters but not the audience.

Can I ask why Sideways is in this list? Do you mean Sideways with Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church? Cause I would never ever put that movie in with films like American Pie, totally different IMO. Good, but different. Or is there another Sideways I am unaware of?

I’m wondering the same thing. I loved Sideways, but IMO a very different type of movie than American Pie and The Hangover. I would put Super Troopers in there though

Well, I put Sideways in there because its on my list as one of the funniest films in the last few years, so it’s just there because it’s a comedy. I especially remember the part with the 2 tons of fun girl.

While Sideways has some comic moments, if pressed, I would class it more as a drama than a comedy…

I am still torn about Sideways, as none of the characters (except possibly Virginia Madsens’ Maya) were sympathetic or likeable, but I still thought the movie was quite enjoyable.
