Agreed. Nothing is worse than some jerk talking in a movie, except one who thinks he’s being clever.
I figured that the boys were being stressed out from the whole crazy situation and were getting desperate. Teenagers figure they’re immortal under the best of conditions, and here there was food and maybe a safe haven just on the other side of that door, and the boys got out of hand. I thought Buckley was just naturally crazy too. Maybe she was born that way, maybe she went crazy after the death of a husband or something, but she was living alone off the grid and definitely not used to having guests.
Plus, she had a completely gratuitous creepy doll in her bed, which is only slightly more subtle than having her walk around with a big neon sign that flashes ‘Yup, totally bonkers!’ over her head all the time.
To me, the defining moment of the film was when they flee past a sign advertising McMansions, complete with the slogan ‘You DESERVE this!’.
Right then and there, it was for a second as if M Night had spoken to me directly – ‘You paid for this despite knowing better, despite all criticisms, despite all indications that this movie wouldn’t even be worth downloading from the net – you DESERVE this.’
And I did.
Wait, I just went to IMDb, and found the tagline:
“We’ve Sensed It. We’ve Seen The Signs. Now… It’s Happening.”
Really? I’m speechless… Is that just a desperate effort to draw on Shyamalan’s past successes? Or is somebody just having a good laugh?
And couldn’t they at least have made an effort to include the rest of the bunch, too?
“We’ve Sensed It. We’ve Seen The Signs In The Water. We Thought Our Villages Unbreakable. But Now… It’s Happening.”
Oh, dude…I thought nothing could be worse than calling your movie “The Happening,” but this…this is truly groan inducing if it’s real.
