The Happy College Thread

I just can’t resist this. A long, long time ago, I received my BA from Hampshire College (AKA the Bastard Child of the Four Colleges). I’ll never forget the running joke that the bus drivers had about Smith. When asked why there were late-night runs between Smith and Mount Holyoke when all other bus runs had ended, every bus driver I ever encountered responded with a totally deadpan “Lonely lesbians.” The fact that Smith students typically hate MoHo students only made it funnier. Okay, so it’s not so funny now. I think you had to be there.

Hey… do me a favor. Run down to Atkin’s and have a loaf of Ugly Bread and apple butter for me, 'k?

Oh, and to answer your questions…

A) State University of West Georgia
B) West Central Georgia, a stone’s throw from the Georgia/'Bama border
C) Typical state school, about 18K students
D) Eh. It’s okay. Too few good profs, too many close to retirement. The Psych program is totally whacked… I like the program I’m in now much better.
E) Halfway through my EdS (already have the MA)… might have a year and a half or so left.
F) Community Counseling (as opposed to the school counseling program)

B)Where is it located?

It’s a state university. I seem to believe that it’s one of the smaller (and more exclusive) ones. It’s also pretty widely thought to have the most beautiful campus in the USA.

D)Do you like it?
Yeah, it’s pretty cool. It took me a couple years to get situated, but (looks at beer fridge) I’m having a good time of it now.

Dammit, my beer just fizzed all over my mouse. Fuckin’ A! Oh well, mouse seems to be working.

E)What year are you?
I’m a 4th year. Around here, people don’t refer to themselves as freshmen, sophomores, etc. We all go by how many years we’ve been here. Mr. Jefferson wanted it that way.

F)What is your major?
I’m a double in math and CS. Anyone looking to hire a software engineer with good analytical skills, drop me an e-mail at the address in my profile.

A) Southern Methodist University

C) Private Liberal Arts college. That’s misleading since our b-school and Engineering school are great as well.
D) Yep, I love it here! It’s the only school I applied to.
E) They tell me I’m a senior, I don’t quite believe it.
F) I’m a Philosophy major. Yep, it’s almost useless and I have two possilbe minors: Anthropology and Religous Studies. Both equally useless

Another grad student chiming in.

I’m in my sixth year of getting a Ph.D. in Plant Breeding at Cornell University located in lovely Ithaca, NY. I’m going to finish soon. Soon, I tell you!

Kaje has already described the basic environment, although class sizes tend to be much smaller at the graduate level. You also get less of the sorority types, and more of the irritating know-it-all types.

**A)Where are you in school? **
North Dakota State University
**B)Where is it located? **
Fargo, North Dakota
C)What type of school is it?
Engineering and agricultural school. 58-42 Male-Female ratio. Very very very conservative, very racist, very xenophobic, very homophobic.
**D)Do you like it? **
Some of the time it’s ok. Most of the time I dislike it. The rest of the time I hate it. I think I’m getting a decent education, but it’s really tough to say. I never envisioned college as being like this.
**E)What year are you? **
I’m a 2nd semester sophomore by credits. I’m working at graduating in 3, as opposed to 4 years, so in terms of time I have 2 more years to go including this one.
F)What is your major?
Political Science

**A)Where are you in school? **

Northland College

B)Where is it located?

Ashland, WI That’s way, way, way, way up north, on the shores of Lake Superior, near Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. Yes, it is very pretty up here.

C)What type of school is it?

Northland College is an environmental liberal arts school (or, excuse me, it is THE environmental liberal arts school. I work in PR, I should know this.) Enrollment just under 1,000, co-ed, but there’s way more women than men (and believe me, this lesbian isn’t complaining :D) Politically left of left. Culturally it is impressivly diverse, considering we’re in nowheresville Wisconsin. Etc.

**D)Do you like it? **

I LOVE it here. The people–students and faculty–are amazingly friendly and tolerent. I’m getting a good, well-rounded liberal education, and my time at Northland has made me love learning and love life, in a way that nothing had before. The people here have what one of my writing professors call “shameless passion.” There is an incredible honest enthusiaum and energy on this campus that I haven’t seen anywhere else.

**E)What year are you? **

Senior.

**F)What is your major? **

Fine arts major with a 2-D visual arts emphasis. Writing minor.

The University of the South.

Sewanee, Tennessee, USA.

very small (~1000 undergrads) rural private liberal arts school.

Only been here a couple months and can’t really say if I like it yet - I’ve met some nice people but don’t really have any really good friends yet.

freshman (I’m a girl, but none of this PC “first year” stuff. Freshman. :D)

We don’t declare majors until second semester sophomore year. I might do History. Or English. Or PoliSci…

Let’s see here:

A)Where are you in school?
[li]Currently, University of Memphis. This is the fifth of five colleges/universities I’ve been to.[/li]
B)Where is it located?
[li]Memphis, TN.[/li]
C)What type of school is it?
[li]General Purpose, state (under)funded.[/li]
D)Do you like it?
[li]Well, at least it has a ‘normal’ mascot. No more kangaroos or gamecocks for me![/li]
E)What year are you?
[li]Errrr. Fifth-year (or so) senior. Number of semesters left depends on if I can sweet talk the Powers That Be into letting me use previous coursework in new and exiting ways. ;)[/li]
F)What is your major?
[li]CompSci: this paricular program is a math/theory/programming base. Might branch over into math, or MIS, dunno yet. Depends on how burnt out I am, and what my course options are next semester. :p[/li]
(Waves to The Red Menace, and tosses over a buffalo nickel. Also waves to Tattva, even though I was on the edge of the state, and not smack in the middle.)

F)What is your major?
A) University of Florida- College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

C) State(public) university, I really don’t know much about it. Let’s just say I applied at random, more or less. I didn’t know they had a football team named Gator.
D) Depends on the day and mood. I like the people, they have treated me nicely so far.
E) Fresh(wo)man with a few college courses passed thanks to dual-enrollment(but I don’t know if I got credit) and ahead of track by a semester.
F) Animal Sciences, pre-vet track, to become…a veterinarian.
G) Random facts: F-big, lots of fraternities and sororities(which I politely abhor), by what I have read and been told, elitist student governmen, overall good public school, has bureocracy problems, but the people are nice and try to make it a bit easier for you
