the heart of an athlete

Another season of my local hockey league began this week. Does anyone else here play in a local sports league? If so I think you’ll agree that those who truly love the game they play do not play for money or endorsements. They just simply play because they love the game.

Every week I play hockey, simply because I love the game…any other ideas?
oh, we won 5-3…

Love of the game, definitely. I turned out as a never-playing substitute every Wednesday night for a year playing for “Torpedo Rushmoor” in the local five-a-side footie league. We spent our own cash getting a crap green, black and yellow kit, and even had a sponsor (sadly, it was “Farnborough Joke Shop”, but there you go…

It doesn’t matter what the sport, true enthusiasts do it for the love of their chosen sport.
For me it’s tennis in the summer and table tennis in the winter. I’m not that great at either but am competitive and just love my chosen sports. It makes me feel good and that’s all that matters.

I run triathlons and 5k runs (I consider myself a triathlete who runs on the side, even though I do more straight runs than triathlons), and I’m a confirmed mid-pack age grouper. I’ll never win anything (I blame my mom for giving me such lousy mitochondria :)), I do it just for fun and the love of sport.

I play Hockey/Soccer. My girlfriend plays Soccer.

I agree… players in these sports anyway are playing for the love of the game. At least, I know I am.

It reminds you of the commercial of the guys playing pond hockey. The voice over guy goes… "When we’re out here But, we like to pretend that we’re Wayne Gretzky shooting one past Belfour… " (something like that… ) Then he goes… “the funny thing is, sometimes they wish they were us. Like, when the game is on the line, and you’re so tired you just can’t skate any more. And the rules make them stop… we just keep on playing!” I used to love that commercial. (That and the commercial about how Hockey goalies kick ass. Since thats what I play. )
