The Help (open spoilers)

Has anyone else seen this yet? I saw it at a matinee today and loved it. Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, & Emma Stone were fantastic. Alot of great scenes. When they showed Aibileen in the little garage privy her employer built for her was anyone else thinking “Eek, they gave her her own toilet for hygenic  reasons, but didn’t bother putting in anyplace for her to wash her hands .” I used to work with a woman who’s mother was a maid down south. I know about the obession with not using the same toilet, but wow there were Southern housewives who really prefered that their maids go outside (in the backyard. Hilly was such a bitch; it was so satisfying to watch the humiliations reaped upon her. And Skeeter was right. There’s no way in Hell Hilly would try to sue her; that would involve publicaly aknowledging the Skeeter was writing about Jackson and no matter how it turned out it court everyone, black or white, would know her as “That woman who was so stupid she ate nigger shit without realizing it!”.

Actually, I liked The Hard Day’s Night better.

Oh…that version of the film The Help…

Seriously - have never heard of the book, but the film is getting pretty good reviews, and it sounds like an interesting story, so will probably go see it tomorrow. I will return to this thread after the show!

(bump)

Did anybody else see this?

I saw it on Sunday and absolutely loved it!!

The book did a better job though at conveying some of the emotional stuff, both the funny bits and the sad ones. Particularly the end seen when Aibileen is fired and has to leave Mae Mobley. I really wish they would’ve done more with that scene in the movie.

I loved Hilly’s mother. I forget her name in the book. Sissy Spacek did a fantastic job bringing such a colorful character to life. My favorite scenes were her laughing about Hilly eating shit. The entire theater cracked up.

I can’t believe there aren’t more posts here. I saw the movie at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon and the theater was packed. Sure I think the bad rain in our area had something to do with it but it’s getting excellent reviews too.
