the history of pancakes

I consider myself a student of history but while eating breakfast (pancakes btw) the question came to mind the history and origins of the common pancake. Does anyone have any substantiated proof of when and where the first pancake was made and consumed? Its a trivial matter but inquiring minds want to know.

Sincerely,

Trey

But then another site that describes what are thought of as pancakes in various countries, says:

The Wikipedia says this:

Several other sources mention them being featured in cookbooks since 1439, but they all seem to be lifting text from each other without producing the name of the 15th century cookbook.

I would guess that the Wikipedia is right in saying that the origins extend “into antiquity”. The ingredients and methods are very basic, and ancient cultures would have been able to make them, in one form or another.

The OED cites it first, thusly:

I won’t speculate on what “Two Cookery-bks” means. It IS the title of the book(s).

As a bonus, my Chambers Dic. of Ety. says.
