There are going to be two sequential “The Hobbit” movies, so the secondary titles are a way of distinguishing them. Sure, they could have just called them “part 1” and “part 2” but that’s not the road they’ve taken.
And, part 6 of "Quint"s is available:

Ah, ok, thank you for the explanation. I’ve not been following the production work on this movie at all (I knew del Toro was out and Jackson was in as director and am glad of the fact even tho I love del Toro’s work), but that’s about all I knew. I had no idea it was gonna be 2 movies.
I don’t usually follow a movie while it’s in production, as I’d really rather just wait and experience the final product with as few preconceived ideas as possible. I came in here hoping that there was a link to a trailer, however, and I wasn’t disappointed in that or in what I saw in the trailer. In fact, ISTM that this (these) could be a lot more fun than LOTR was.
I was under the impression that the second movie was going to deal with the goings-on in Middle Earth for the 60 years the ring was safely in the Shire.
But the second movie is called The Hobbit: There and Back Again. That sounds like an odd title for that plot.
Or do I have the plot of the second movie wrong?
I don’t think it’s been revealed exactly how the two movies are split. Most people are just guessing. I think the entire book has been split into two parts, and been padded out to movie length with additional material, rather than a distinctive separation of story between the two episodes. But of course, I’m just guessing also.
I think the first movie will be up to the Elves in Mirkwood (there’s definitely some spider webs), seems like the logical point to stop. Nothing in the trailer shows anything Smaug or 5 armies-related, so I figure that’s for part 2. The whole thing is going to be filled out with all the stuff that happens behind the scenes, if I understand correctly - the White Council and Necromancer and that.
As to the trailer: Squeeee!
That’s my current understanding, as well. That would explain certain scenes in the trailer (I suppose I should spoiler them)…
Gandalf walking around in ruins by himself, staff in one hand, and the sword Glamdring in the other. Also, the presence of Galadriel in the trailer…she doesn’t appear in the book at all, but other canon established that she was in the White Council.
ISTR that early discussions with Jackson about making one book into two movies included that as a possibility, but it seems like that was set aside at some point.
They can make a third movie about that. I don’t mind.
And hopefully WB can get their hands on the movie rights to the Similarion. I want to see the legion of Balrogs badly.
I love the dwarves’ song, too. And Martin Freeman is exactly Bilbo in the flesh, everything I hoped he would be. I didn’t see any glimpses of trolls or stone giants in this trailer, and I’m eager to see how they’ll look.
There is definitely a glimpse of troll feet / shins.

Dammit, a whole year to wait for the first part.
Some of those dwarves look decidedly undwarvenly. Other than that it looks great and i cant wait.
Trailer for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”:
Looks like we get a song, my preciousessess.
Yep, it made me think of the old animated version (which I like). I’m not sure whether that was a nod to it or not.
[damn you Tangent!]
Actually I like that DC-avoids stereotyping them too much-why can’t 2 of them be “conventionally” handsome in a more human sense? [Talking about Thorin and Kili here.]
Merged JohnDiFool’s thread into this one.
As we hadn’t seen too many Tolkien dwarfs in LOTR, we have very little to compare.
By the way, is it dwarfs or dwarves in Tolkien’s writing?
