The Hobbit movie(s) anticipation thread

The three titles are:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: There and Back Again
Makes me think Smaug dies in the second one and the final one is the battle and aftermath.

The Desolation of Smaug has nothing to do with what happens to Smaug, but what Smaug happens to. It’s the blasted region around Erebor which Smaug’s depredations have ruined.

I really really hope not, but my inner pessimist is telling me this 3-movie thing is going to be a flipping disaster. Don’t do this to me, PJ.

As I said, “The Hobbit III-The Quest For More Money.”

The new trailer is out today and I have to say, it looks great.

Can anybody translate Gollum’s lines in the new trailer into English. After repeated viewings, I still can’t understand him.

“And if it loses, what then? Well, if it loses, Precious, then we eats it! If Baggins loses, we eats it whole.”

If you go to www.thehobbit.com, they have different endings to the trailer

Brian

There are too many fuxing with it.

Very amusing!!

Loves gollum, we does! “I wasn’t talking to you!”

“I’m not sure it’s even a sword. More like a letter opener.”

Little footnote:
I have good friends who work for MGM, and the studio was truly hesitant about a third film. Peter Jackson had to really sell the idea to them.
Once they saw footage and understood what he was doing, they agreed there was more than enough material to warrant a third film. However, it was not a decision made lightly, based solely off greed (although I doubt they think they will lose any money on a 3rd film) but realizing Jackson had a vision that was making The Hobbit a far more fleshed-out film, researching Tolkein’s notes and bringing lesser-known characters and events to light.

I have no doubt there will be/are naysayers and purists who only want what is word-for-word in the original book, but I have great faith in Jackson and his love of all things Middle Earth - and I would have no problem if he filmed Part 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9…111.

As far as I am concerned, I would be happy with Anthony Bourdain visiting the Shire and just roaming around the neighborhood and trying the foods and meeting the locals.

TORN has thier frame-by-frame analysis of the trailer:

Brian

Maybe I should be more cynical (I usually am!), but I don’t think that money is the main reason for this. Jackson doesn’t strike me as the type for whom it is the main motivation. I think he loves Middle earth and the vision he has created of it, and he wants to spend as much time with it as possible. He’s having a blast and doesn’t want to let go.

Just MHO, of course.

And if he keeps the quality up (and the trailers look good so far!), I’m with him for the ride!

Here’s Entertainment Weekly’s take on the new trailer:

First look at Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel. So the character doesn’t appear in the novel, big deal. Back in January, Lilly described Tauriel as a warrior and head of the Elven Guard. “She’s the big shot in the army,” said Lilly. “So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly.”

Do any women Elves fight in any of the novels?

None that I can think of. They’re notable mostly for how wise they are, who they marry, and/or what children they bear.

Luthien took down Sauron.

Let’s start with Luthien… along with being the “fairest child of Elves or Men”, the daughter of a Maia, and the most accomplished singer of all time, she also loved her man so much as to be willing to knock out her guards and leave home and face down Sauron and beat Sauron’s sorry ass just to stand by him. She was willing to go with him straight to Thangorodrim itself, put one over on Morgoth(!), and even after all that still cared for him so much that she was willing to go to Mandos and talk the Valar into bringing Beren back to life. Let’s face it: Luthien Tinuviel was one hot thoroughly accomplished scared-o-nothin’ clever-as-hell broad. Luthien vs. Arwen - Who was the better babe?
