The Hobbit movie(s) anticipation thread

I tend to think they’ll be grimier looking in the movie. Those are publicity stills.

I find it very interesting how they’ve managed to make the dwarfs look short, even when devoid of context and my being fully aware they’re really all 6 foot actors.

And here is Fili and Kili

I’m a little said they’re not going with the colored caps described in the book. Would it kill these dwarves to add a little color to their wardrobe?

Disney would sue. They have a copyright on the whole “little people in brightly colored clothing” thing.

I’ve never been more excited about the release of a movie(s).

Well, I was more pumped for Phantom Menace. I also was hugely pumped for all three Lord of the Rings.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

Very true, but I think The Hobbit is as close to a sure thing as you can expect from a movie.

Shhh! Don’t jinx it!

Oh, I’m quite confident, especially with Peter Jackson directing.

Seconding what **GuanoLad **said. How the hell’d they make those actors look so short with nothing else to compare them to in the image! Amazing!

Very short in-seam. Either that or the dwarfs are sagging.

I notice several things in those shots that support this illusion. There may be more, but I’m no expert.

  1. The camera’s position is shot from slightly above the subject’s faces, so we’re looking ever so slightly down at them.

  2. There is significant empty space above their heads in each shot.

  3. The proportions of their clothing is odd and overwhelms them, which I guess serves to make them look like kids bundled in winter clothing: coats at knee or mid calf lengths, ridiculously heavy boots, belts that look 6 inches tall, a scarf that looks inches thick, sleeves big enough for their legs to fit through. Huge hair, also. (And I’d bet those outfits are hot and uncomfortable)

Ian Holm is still the “real” Frodo, as far as I’m concerned.

And here is Bofur, Bifur, and Bombur.

Add Balin, Dwalin, and Thorin, and we’ll have it wrapped up.

BTW, are they pronounced Bah-lin and Dwah-lin, or Bay-lin and Dway-lin?

ETA: I always heard it in my head as the latter, but I suspect it is the former. And my ROTK pronunciation guide appendix isn’t at hand.

Two words: Elf. Magic.

Gimli talks about his cousin “Bah-lin” in FOTR.

On the audiobook version I have it’s pronounced “Bah-lin” and “Dwah-lin”, so that’s what I’ve got cemented in my head.

Only Thorin remains unrevealed:

Brian

And here is Thorin Oakenshield, holding Orcrist.
