The “I’m surprised there’s not a New Year’s resolution post so I guess I’ll start one” post

Mine are pretty typical:

  • 8th annual Dry January
  • Go back on keto (the only diet I seem to be able to successfully lose weight on) and lose 20 or 30 lbs.
  • Exercise and get back into some semblance of shape

How bout y’all?

Hope everyone’s 2021 is starting out great!

Don’t get COVID.
Read and write more.
Be generous.

Somebody asked me, in 2021, what will you be doing less of, what will you be doing more of?

I answered:

The thing I’ll be doing less of: drinking.

The thing I’ll be doing more of: saying I’ll be doing less drinking.

My only resolution is to stay safe until my wife and I can get vaccinated.

Write a bit more. 2020 was a pretty sparse year for me. I may be deluding myself, but it’s a delusion I like!

My resolution is to try hard to not make generalizations and blanket statements about groups of people.

No one who knows me whom I’ve told this is very sanguine about my keeping this one.

Not to make any New Year’s resolutions. I was successful!

To clean the house, and once that’s done, maintain it every day by washing dishes, making my bed, cleaning the cat box, and taking out the garbage.

  1. I guess just go back on my cutting diet for the first 3-4 months and then re-evaluate. I thought I was going to “maingain” for awhile but I mostly ended up doing a dirty bulk the past 2 months. I think I needed it though as my previous dieting (IF with some keto mixed in) left me too skinny. Now I cut on high protein and don’t really track anything else as it’s impossible for me to go over my TDEE doing that.

  2. Get back on a healthy sleep routine. If I do nothing else, just getting proper sleep is the number one thing for my energy levels, productivity, looks, body composition and so on. I went from being great and consistent to terrible the past 2 months.

  3. Spend as little time or effort possible on any kind of dating activity or probably socializing in general outside of what is routine and already established.

  4. Plan all my time outside of sleep and work to make sure I prioritize exercise and have some business and learning activity every day.

Get to bed earlier and maintain a standard sleep schedule. Being sleep-deprived causes me all sorts of problems.

I’m retired, and last year was a year where surgeries and health problems kept me practically homebound. My body pisses me off, but at least it has good timing. So, for 2021:

  1. Get vaccinated – I’ve already signed up with my county health dept. scheduling app, and they’re determining which tier I’m in. Docs tell me I’m higher up the list than I thought (see above) so I might get it sooner than expected. This is my number one goal I guess.

  2. Travel again – I have a long range RV which will allow near-zero-contact travel to areas off the beaten path, and I intend to get started within days.

  3. More travel: Finish the final steps getting boat ready for ICW and Gulf exploring. This was interrupted by (you guessed it) the health crap at the top. Like the RV, boat is self-contained including generator, and will allow near-zero contact travel by anchoring alone wherever I like, and closer exploration with the inflatable.

  4. Finish getting a hunting lease: I’m negotiating with a club now on a fairly large one, but not complete yet. I stopped hunting a few years ago and want to restart. It’s a few thousand acres with tons of game and I’d like to return to the sport, and another source of meat too. Again, another form of travel and fun with very little contact required.

  5. Restart walking and real exercise again. Now that I’m able, I want to increase stamina and flexibility. Most of the really beautiful areas of the country require hiking boots, and I’d like to return to that again too.

  6. Continue my (very amateurish) photography with the DSLR. All the above will provide better source material than my backyard and I hope to get more skilled with it.

I resolve to get good and drunk before podting to the SDMB. As that is pretty much my current practice, I think I’ll be able to ease right into it.

Survive until January 27 - that’s when my second vaccine dose starts to reach max effectiveness.
