Well, I didn’t officially make any new year’s resolutions, but I did decide to be more consistent with my workouts, and I have managed to do that despite an absolutely insane month. Today I did resistance training in short breaks throughout the course of a half hour while I simultaneously worked on a grant application. It was literally the only way I could do it. I also had to cancel with my trainer due to weather last Saturday but did the workout at home.
I thought it was going to take a lot more mental effort and it hasn’t required much. I guess I am a little more motivated now that I see myself getting stronger. I wouldn’t call my workout today easy, but it would have kicked my ass a month ago.
I don’t really make Resolutions in any official way, like writing them down, or insisting on starting in January or anything. But I do usually look at a new year as a good a time as any to assess and set some goals, so I guess that counts. And my completely boring and predictable one is to lose some weight. Which I have not managed to do yet. Indeed I’ve put on weight since Jan 1.
I think every decade or so the human body passes some kind of checkpoint where it’s even harder still to lose weight, and I think that’s happened to me again, as my usual methods of reducing my meal portions is not getting results. Though I also have recently moved house, and bouncing back from the stresses of that means I’m content and not gnawing with worry, plus having a shorter distance to travel means my daily exercise has been nearly eliminated. So maybe it’s that.
I also don’t really do ‘resolutions’ but I do consider January as kind of a ‘reset’ after the excesses of the holidays. Which for me includes doing a dry January for the past 12 years or so, eating more healthy, and stepping up my exercise. This month has been pretty stressful, and I’ve done so-so in all 3 categories (my January has been more ‘damp’ than ‘dry’, for example ).
I like to make a new year’s resolution. At least one. This year I resolved not to wear holey clothes (I don’t have much, but tended to wear the few very worn pieces over the weekend, especially when hiking).
So far I have kept them, in fact I am about to go to a shop to get a new sweatshirt to replace one I must have had since the mid-2000s, far and away my oldest item of clothing that I have decided not to wear again.
For my curiosity I don’t particularly care about determining how many are hitting perfection, and believe that allowing ourselves a bit of grace in that regard is preferred.
And so far I am pleasantly surprised that the solid majority are not failing. I was expecting most would not be able to claim success.
I am working on my health, getting exercise and trying to lose weight. I’ve decided my default would be to work out every day, and so far I’ve only missed three days in January and they were all because of activities that truly took up the whole day. If it’s possible to have the time to get up and exercise (in the basement, about 45 mins bike+a bit of weights), then I’ve been sticking with it.
I’m not tracking weight closely and started controlling portions better before the holidays, so while I’m not entirely sure how much I’ve lost in January I’m thinking it’s in the 4-6lb range and down 10ish from late October. I bought pants for a conference in October and they are now too big. I’m down one hole on my belt.
I’m sort of aiming for another 10ish overall but without a timeframe. I’m sort of hoping I can shave 2-3 off in the next month before a beach vacation just for the psychology of passing a particular number threshold. Maybe the 10-12 by May, when my husband and I have a couple’s weekend planned (ok, it’s three days of punk concerts but there’s a hotel!).
