And let’s -all- be more careful in suggesting anything along these lines. This thread has repeatedly dipped into suggesting illegal activities. Dial all of this back, and please, no more “wink-wink-nudge-nudge say no more”.
Congress can limit, cut, or put restrictions on ICE funding. DHS (ie ICE) currently has funds through Jan 30. A funding bill just passed the House (with D’s supporting) and is now in the Senate with a vote soon.
Passing this bill with ICE restrictions is how Congress should/can have a very powerful say in how ICE operates. If they want to. If they don’t want to, they’ll pass it but then complain to us how terrible ICE is as if there was not anything they could possibly do about it.
Like one Democrat congressman who voted for the bill, but now “expresses regret” because it funds DHS (ICE). The vote was a few days ago…
If that vote happened after the Pretti murder, I don’t think it would have received D support and even a few Rs might have declined (maybe, I’m not sure).
Generally though, Congress can direct how the money they appropriate to Executive departments is used (ex. ICE can’t apprehend anyone without a judicial warrant). Not saying that one is practical and not trying to write the bill, but I can think of a lot of non-controversial ways to have more oversight on how the money is used.
At the very least Democrats should put your money where you mouth is (and you can probably get some Republicans, too). This is Gov’t 101. They have power if they want to use it. At the very least don’t make it bipartisan.
Speaking to this - while I know we as a nation would suffer from a shutdown, and especially those who can afford it least, this thread and multiple abuses reported within have absolutely reached the threshold of deciding a shutdown is the far lesser evil.
Shut it down, on this Issue, and make sure conditions for supporting any future bills involve a full, public investigation of the now hundreds of ICE over-reaches, with actual, enforced and substantial consequences to all involved. NO more masks, failures to identify, and willful disobeying of the constitution.
Make sure that the faces of the people and these specific demands are front and center every time Trump tries to blame the Democrats on funding.
I’d say more, but want to keep this specific to what the consequences for the MN events should be, rather than a more general discussion.
That they let it happen after the Good murder is enough to never vote for them. As always, the dems in congress disappoint. They are not fighting for anything it seems.
I’ve spun off another thread for further discussion of Shutdown as a way to hold ICE and the administration responsible. Please use it for further discussion of the matter.
Bovino being out won’t change much but it’s nice. Dude was living out his nazi cosplay fantasies and telling people if you keep calling us the gestapo we’re just gonna have to kill you to prove you wrong
Allow me to break out my teeny-tiny violin to honor the downfall of the 1/3 Reich as he leaves Minnesota.
It’s a start, and I give credit to Walz for forcing the admin’s hand on this. He brought up the NG, he had a 1-on-1 with Trump, and now there’s some movement.
Not sure if this is the right thread, but is there any mechanism for promptly legally challenging ICE’s actions? Was there no lawsuit that could be heard in the 2 weeks after Good’s killing? Were there Dems in Congress clamoring for hearings or proposing bills?
At times it seems the courts can act quite quickly. But not in this case.
