'The IMDB recommends ...' game

While searching around on the IMDB I found that the ‘also recommended’ choices can be quite odd sometimes. What I wonder is how easily one could guess a film simply by reading the list of recommended titles. So I’ll put some out as a test. I get the feeling, though, that it might end up being very tough. The movies are linked most often by genre, sometimes by actor, or by director or possibly by year. I’m not sure exactly what algorithm/rating system they use.
One thing that I’ve found is that the links are often one-way; you probably won’t get the answer by putting in the list of movies and checking the recommendations for them. As a hint, I’ll put the year of the movie with the list.

Here’s one I think will be easy :

The movie came out in 1996; the IMDB recommends …

Mars Attacks! (1996)
Deep Impact (1998)
Men In Black (1997)
Star Trek:First Contact (1996)
Face/Off (1997)
The Fifth Element (1997)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
The War of the Worlds (1953)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Star Wars (1977)

Here’s the one that got me thinking about it, slightly tougher since it seems so esoteric :

The movie came out in 1985; the IMDB recommends …

The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Blues Brothers 2000 (1998)
Firefox (1982)
Octopussy (1983)
Top Secret! (1984)
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Funny Farm (1988)
Real Men (1987)
Telefon (1977)
Vibes (1988)

And another couple odd ones :

The movie also came out in 1985; the IMDB recommends …

Mars Attacks! (1996) (You get the feeling they just want you to watch this?)
Sixteen Candles (1984)
One Crazy Summer (1986)
Harold and Maude (1971)
The Heavenly Kid (1985)
Real Genius (1985)
Can’t Hardly Wait (1998)
Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985)
Hot Pursuit (1987)
High School Caesar (1960)
The movie came out in 1955, the IMDB recommends …

The St. Tammany Miracle (1994)
Blackboard Jungle (1955)
The Ballad of Little Jo (1993)
The Trigger Effect (1996)
Never Ashamed (1984)
Once Upon a Time … When We Were Colored (1996)
Happiness (1998)
Pleasantville (1998)
The Ice Storm (1997)
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

This is probably better suited for MPSIMS… i think a Moderator will be along shortly…

  1. Independence Day
  2. Don’t know, maybe Fletch? Top Gun?
  3. The Breakfast Club?
  4. I’d Guess “guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, but that was in the 60’s. Don’t Know.

I agree with Independance Day for the first one.

Not sure about the 2nd one… a funny spy movie?

Better Off Dead for the third one?

I have no idea for the 4th one

Here’s another diverse collection for someone to try and puzzle out. I’ve mixed the order up and more importantly left two movies out.

Superman (1978)
George of the Jungle (1997)
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)
Honey, I Blew Up the Kid (1992)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Splash (1984)
Teen Wolf (1985)

oops … i did forget I was in IMHO; if it lasts, it’ll get moved

and apologies if this double-posts, I was disconnected while writing.

Independence Day is of course correct

‘funny spy movie’ is on the right track … and the main actors are clued by two of the movies (this movie maybe wasn’t too popular, IIRC)

Better Off Dead is correct for #3, I thought that one’d be tough, but you got it right.

The 4th one’s links are mostly thematic; I’m actually a little surprised they didn’t give an actor tie-in (which would have given it away)

dpr, I’m not sure about yours … Oh! Heavenly Dog? Howard the Duck? Something to do with children, animals, maybe an animal superhero of extraterrestrial origin?

Spies Like Us!

The 4th one’s links are mostly thematic; I’m actually a little surprised they didn’t give an actor tie-in (which would have given it away)

Marty and Rebel Without a Cause are the only two flicks from '55 that i know for sure. I’ll guess Rebel.

I assume it has two sequels. the only trilogy I know of that is funny is Back to the Future.

Here’s my try from 1981:

Starship Troopers (1997)
Meatballs (1979)
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Boys in Company C, The (1978)
Catch-22 (1970)
Ghostbusters (1984)
G.I. Jane (1997)
Universal Soldier (1992)
Fire Birds (1990)
Big Red One, The (1980)

Naw, I’m keeping this one.

Joey got it: Back to the future. As for yours… I can see Bill Murray…

Panama: One Crazy Summer gave it away. I always link those two in my mind.
Another one:

Goonies, The
Dark Crystal, The
Willow
Romancing the Stone
Muppet Treasure Island
Peter Pan
Jungle Book, The
Far Off Place, A
Amazing Panda Adventure, The

Thanks, slythe; good to know you’re keeping it around.

dpr - I’m guessing The Neverending Story on yours.

Here’s another one for me, from 1995 :

Braveheart (1995)
JFK (1991)
Empire of the Sun (1987)
First Knight (1995)
War and Peace (1956)
Perdita Durango (1997)
A Time to Kill (1996)
L’Amant (1991)
Year of the Dragon (1985)
One Man’s Hero (1999)

It’s NOT the neverending story.

Still working on your new one. 1995? Hmmm

Rob Roy?

Rob Roy is right; and 30 seconds after I hit submit, disconnected, and powered down last night, I realized yours was the Princess Bride.

forget to mention that you’re right, Joey, with Rebel.

Here’s another one from '95 :

The Truman Show ('98)
The Devil’s Advocate ('97)
Legends of the Fall ('94)
Back to the Planet of the Apes ('74,TV)
Star Trek: First Contact ('96)
Sphere ('98)
Gattaca ('97)
The Postman ('97)
Cyborg ('89)
Color of Night ('94)
