Possibly for the same reason we were given as undergrads - in case any “undesireables” try to get into the dorms. if the guys are on the ground floor, then they can head them off.
I’d be more likely to believe that they’re hoping that the undesirables already living on the ground floor would be too lazy to climb all those stairs.
