The Iowa caucuses

Been getting daily phone calls for weeks from Bradley and Gore people. One of them stands out. Poor kid must have been reading from a script, but he deviated at the end of the spiel to ask a question.

What’s a caucus?

I suppose his mom finagled, threatened or bribed him into helping on the phones. He told me I was the first person he’d talked to who had ever been to a caucus, and he wanted to know what we do there.

I wanted to say drink beer and sing high school fight songs, but he was so sincere and befuddled, I just couldn’t.

Ya know, I don’t get it. I’m a registered voter (No Party, even…you’d think I’d be on the top of their list, trying to sell me), I live in the capital city, in one of the “better neighborhoods”…I’ve not received one call. Not a call, not a postcard, not a flyer, nothing. Not that I really give a shit, in fact, this is really the first time I’ve thought about it. Guess it just makes me wonder why they don’t care about my vote?

Oh, and I don’t really know what a caucus is, either.

“…being normal is not necessarily a virtue. It rather denotes a lack of courage.”
