The Jeopardy thread [was James Holzhauer][contains spoilers]

The program description on my cable program guide calls these episodes “Around the World with Alex”. And, BTW, watch Tuesday’s episode (the one with the Sesame Street characters) to the very end. They showed some outtakes of Alex with Elmo.

That’s some motivation!

It reminds me of the scene in Glengarry Glen Ross about the Sales Contest.

First prize is a Cadillac, second prize is a set of steak knives, third prize is “you’re fired.”

Sorry it took me so long to follow up on my previous message; my December was rather busy.

For the week of 12/7-11/2020, here are the amounts for second and third place after answering Final Jeopardy.

MONDAY (12/7): $100 | $0
TUESDAY (12/8): $13,000 | $8799
WEDNESDAY (12/9): $21,200 | $320
THURSDAY (12/10): $4000 | $15
FRIDAY (12/11): $3700 | $1

Total Week Payout: $57,129 versus $15,000 under the long-standing current system.

Would that be a significant difference for Sony? Nobody here can say for certain. However, like others pointed out, that’s how they already do it on Wheel of Fortune.

Wheel doesn’t involve the chance of losing what you’ve already won, so it doesn’t promote playing ‘safe’ by checking out after you hit a certain point, thus making the rest of the show boring, which is the problem the Jeopardy! producers have said they were having when they did it that way.

Jan 6 show was understandably preempted. Local station scheduled to show at 1:30 local. First 5 min preempted, (came back during contestant interviews) but show joined in progress.

I guessed the correct answer (some extra text to make the blur less easy to see) Wonder Woman I wasn’t 100% what year it was released.

Brian

read on another board that Steve Kornacki was being considered as new host. I guess I could see that. Also Mayim Bialik

Both are a little nerdy but personable. Mayim has a PhD in neuroscience. I heard her on Maron’s podcast once, she was interesting

I thought of 1917, but based on Alex’s pre-clue warning, I surmised that “during” WWI didn’t necessarily mean about WWI, so I figured that wasn’t it. Didn’t come up with the correct answer though.

I read in several places that Katie Couric definitely will host for one week

heard that too, I think they meant permanent host. I am now in favor of Mayim. Librarian hot, when she doesn’t have a lot of makeup

She’s starring in a new show called Call Me Kat on Fox. Of course, if it flops (as do so many shows in their first season), she’d be available.

the reviews weren’t good, and I don’t have cable , but judging from this, she will be available

Mayim Bialik has my vote, way more than Jennings.

Looks remarkably like Miranda, which I’ve never thought is funny either.

I know it’s a ripoff, but couldn’t they have made it a bit less … obvious?

I think they explicitly say that is based on that in the credts.

Briani

Yes, which is why I know it’s a ripoff. But I would know even if they didn’t say that.

There’s a difference between a “ripoff” which implies an unauthorized copy and an adaptation that’s made with the cooperation of the original producers.

This is why I’m afraid to go on this show. While I know a lot of things that come up on the show, the gaps in my knowledge are huge. I never saw that movie, and never would have guessed it was set during WWI.

Nice tribute at the end of Friday’s show (clips of Alex: in costume, on location, dancing, etc)

Brian

I read in “Answers in the Form of Questions” that they used to let second and third keep their winnings, but it resulted in people getting to a threshold they wanted/were comfortable with and then shutting down to ride out the game. One guy apparently wanted to win enough to buy an engagement ring, got what he thought he needed and then was mute the rest of the game, to protect what he had.
