August 2007, a drunk driver totaled my $20,000 pickup. Still drivable, mostly cosmetic. February 2008. Young driver on ice, re-totaled it. No longer drivable, I sold it to a salvage yard. Tonight, around 8:00 pm my van (trucks replacement) was bashed in the rear, shoved the rear tire into the bodywork. Movable, not drivable.
All of these happened on the street, in front of my house, in “The Kill Zone”.
Our street Y’s up one house from ours, and people just fly down it. We have even had a car go through the yard once. I think I am gonna put some red X’s on the curb, so people who want to get rid of their old gas guzzlers can park there. Maybe shield my cars. Some Christmas present eh?
BTW, Yes my vehicles have all been legally parked. I guess I should be happy no one was hurt. Still sucks that I can’t park in front of my house, without getting it all smashed up.
Is this something you could contact the city over? I know one neighbourhood in my home town had a street where people were always speeding, and the city put little medians in the road resulting in a very zig-zaggy road to slow down traffic. It’s been like that for years, so I guess it works. It just seems like there is clearly a problem with that road design, and since it’s costing you money on a yearly basis, perhaps the city should do something about it.
I doubt they will do anything other than make a no parking zone in front of my house. The roads “above” the Y section don’t have parking or houses. The 25 mph speed limit is routinely ignored. The people doing 35, don’t really bother me unless it is icy or really wet. Many people hit 55 and more along this stretch. Even with all this money to gather, they only set up speed traps for a week or so, then stop. 24 hours later the cars just fly by again. I thought up a good scheme though. Park a cruiser at the corner of the Y for a week, then set up a speed trap. They get conditioned to the empty cruiser and start speeding up again in a few days. They have done something like this on the highways before. Nail a few of the regulars at those speeds, maybe they will at least change the route they travel.
The adjuster is suppose to come look at the damage tomorrow & we are considering just going to one vehicle so we can fit in the driveway.
