The Kilt-wearin' man is back from Scotland!

Well, what an incredible trip that was! If you’re interested, check out my LiveJournal and you’ll get the story (I’ve got the first couple of days written up so far…) and there’s a link to follow to our best vacation photos - yes, you’ll finally get to see the mysterious Kilt-wearin’ man and his lovely wife along with fantastic Scottish scenery and castle ruins.

So, if you’re interested or merely curious, please feel free to explore…

Oh, and Scottish (or British) Dopers…what is it with the Indian restaraunts? Every town we went to, no matter how small, had at least one tandoori take-away joint!

You missed out the chinese takeaways.

…and the fish and chip shops.

Actually in some areas of the UK you get pizza, burgers, fish’n’chips, and curry all from the same place. They usually do none of these well.

Part of the reason that there are so many curry houses was our absurd drink license laws.
You could not get a licence to serve drink after a certain time of night unless you were a restaurant, so you’d get thrown out of the pubs, feeling peckish and wanting more booze, the only places open would be Indian restaurants.

It’s also a bit of a misnomer to call them ‘Indian’ as there are many nationalities that seem to congregate under that genric term.
It depends upon which town you happen to be in, Bradford in Yorkshire has mainly Pakistani and Bangladeshi curry houses, but in Leicester they are mostly Indian, and usually from one part of India too.

Also because of quite a lot of immigration into the UK after the split between Pakistan and Bangladesh. I was checking on this earlier but quite rushed now - so SORRY - no cite :frowning: but approx./ 85% of “Indian” restaurants/takeaways in Britain are actually Bangladeshi.

Actually this would be more fun than learning what to expect after people have brain aneuryisms and also finding out what type of nasty creepy crawly infects my house!

Still - got to go!

Glad you had such a good trip -wearingman. Was it your first time here?

Yeah, but I’m talking about litereally every town has a tandoori take-away place. Little villages in the Highlands. Places that don’t have fish-n-chips places. Without fail, there’s an Indian (as in “So-and-so’s Family Indian Restaraunt” - not a generalization on my part, really…I prefer Kashmiri food, myself.) or Tandoori restaraunt there. I’m talking about little towns like Aboyne or Drumnadrochit or Stonehaven, too, not just places like Inverness or Aberdeen.

Oh, and if you wanna check out the pictures without wading through my LiveJournal for the link, go here.
