I was watching VH1 the other day and they were playing the top 100 One Hit Wonders of music video. Imagine my surprise to see that “My Sherona” by the Knack, was excluded from the list.
I was just curious if anyone knows if the Knack even made a video for the song, as that’s the only reason I see that would exclude My Sherona from the list. I seem to remember a My Sherona video, although my memory is kind of fuzzy.
I know I saw one when the song became popular again after being used in Reality Bites. In fact, I think it had scenes of the film in it. Not knowing what the band looked like originally I don’t remember if it was an old pre-MTV video or if it was shot because of the movie.
If my memory serves, The Knack had more than one hit, although I cannot name any others off hand (“Good Girls Don’t” maybe). They did only have one good album.
They did do a video for the song, though, which can be seen in the film Reality Bites from the mid 90s.
They currently have a video for “My Sharona” taken from their new live DVD. If you have VH1 Classic, it’ll pop up from time to time, as will “Good Girls Don’t” recorded from the same concert.
Anybody recall the minor hit, “Can’t Put A Price on Love”, from the album, …but the little girls understand?
Does it sound a LOT like the Stones’ “Beast of Burden” or is it just me?
This sort of thing always comes up in our “One Hit Wonder” discussions, but The Knack had three Billboard Top 40 hits in the United States: My Sharona (#1), Good Girls Don’t (#11), and Baby Talks Dirty (#38). In fact, I remember hearing Good Girls Don’t on the radio before I ever heard My Sharona.
It wouldn’t be surprising if no video was made for “My Sharona,” since it came out in 1979, a year before MTV debuted. It wasn’t standard to make videos then, although some were made. But I think I remember seeing a video for the song that looked to me like it could have been made in 1979. Incidentally, I remember seeing at the same time a brief interview with Sharona Alperin, who inspired the song. She was back then the girlfriend of the lead singer.
My guess is it was off the album, but I’m really not sure. I heard it played by a radio station around Philadelphia, but at the time I didn’t even know what group it was. It was only after hearing it again, after its release as single, that I learned it was sung by The Knack.
Sadly, “Get the Knack” was one of the first two albums I bought when I got my first stereo in 1979. The other one was The Who’s “The Kids are Alright”. Still got them both, in a box in the basement.
I’m pretty sure I remember seeing a video for My Sharona when it was popular. It’s fuzzy memory of course, but I recall a blonde driving a convertible along streets that resembled a hilly city like San Francisco. I also remember cuts to the band, and I think the lead singer wearing a black and white striped shirt. For some reason, it seems like I was reminded of Rod Stewart’s Hot Legs video. I dunno, maybe the lead singer resembled Rod in that video? I think the idea was that Sharona was listening to My Sharona on the radio while alternately driving the convertible and The Knack wild.
It seems like this video had quite a bit of play, along with a Leif Garret one. I wouldn’t bet my life on it, but there you have it.
