The Largest Population of __________ outside _________

Does anyone know where to find a list of the largest populations of, for example, Chinese outside of China, or Poles outside of Poland, and where they are located? What country houses the largest number of such exile/immigrant groups?

The only example I know offhand is Cleveland, Ohio: Largest Slovenian population outside Ljubljana. Or so it used to be, don’t know lately.

Vancouver, or more accurately Richmond is at least in the running for the Chinese population. I believe Asian actually passed Caucasian the last time anyone did a survey of the area. I know most of the schools I’m in have a larger Asian population.

Chicago supposedly has the largest number of Poles outside Warsaw, even more than in any other major city in Poland. No idea where that figure comes from, but Chicagoans say it all the time. It’s not at all unusual to hear Polish spoken on the street here, or written on signs or government forms, even outside the major Polish neighborhoods.

As mentioned in another thread, Melbourne, Australia, is the second largest Greek city after Athens.

Now that is an interesting one I never would have expected. Although on a guess I’d suspect that the honor probably now goes to Italy or some other nearby country since Slovenia joined the EU.

Anyone know where the largest group of Americans outside the US is? My guess would probably be somewhere in the UK, or possibly some large retirement community in Mexico or the Caribbean, but I don’t know for sure.

It’s my understanding that there are more kiwis tending bars in London than actually living in New Zealand.

Auckland has the world’s largest Polynesian Community- there are more Niueans living in Auckland than there are in all of Niue, there are more Samoans in Auckland than there are in Apia, more Tongans than in Nuku’alofa, and more Tokelauans than in all of Tokelau.

Wikipedia can be useful for these kinds of things. For example, here’s a chart of Chinese populations under the article “overseas Chinese”.

More likely it’s an overseas military base. As recently as 18 months ago, there will still 222,331 Americans (military, civilians, and dependants) living in Germany.

:smack: I should have thought of that because for quite a few years I was one of those Americans (the numbers of which are, I’m sure, shrinking by the day). Though actually it doesn’t quite fit what I had in mind – I was thinking mostly of immigrant/exile groups.

I beleive the largestpopulation of middle-easterners outside of, um, the middle-east is located in Dearborn, Michigan.

Montreal is the largest French-speaking cuty outside France.

New York City has the largest Jewish population outside Israel, Miami the largest Cuban one outside Cuba, and Los Angeles the largest Mexican one outside Mexico. (I’d say “everyone knows,” but everyone knows.)

LA also has the largest Iranian population outside Teheran, the largest Korean population outside Seoul, and the largest Filipino population outside Manila. [cite]

Berlin has the largest Turkish population outside Turkey.

Besides Poles, Chicago has the largest Lithuanian population outside Lithuania.

Glendale, CA, has the largest Armenian population outside Armenia.

Boise, ID, has the largest Basque population outside the Pyrenees. (Most came over as sheepherders.)

And I am willing to bet my left oyster that none of you knew that Des Moines, IA, has the largest Sudanese population outside Africa (916 as of 2001).

That one surprises me. I would have guessed that there are more than a thousand Sudanese in Dallas…there are a lot of church groups that have been importing refugees from there.

My guesses:
The largest number of Australians outside Australia are in London
The largest number of New Zealanders outside New Zealand are in Sydney
The largest number of American outside the US are in Toronto

(Of course, I could be wrong on all of these)

Actually, apparently it’s now the third – second place goes to Kinshasa. (It may be the second in the number of native French speakers as opposed to second-language speakers; apparently it’s in dispute.)

Are there any examples of a situation where a city’s expat population exceeds the home nation’s capital city?

ie. more greeks in sydney than in athens (not the case, but that’s the idea)

I understand that a book is a man’s best friend outside of a dog. Inside a dog, it’s too dark to read.

I believe that Anaheim, CA has the largest population of Marshallese people outside the Marshall Islands.

I believe that for quite a while after WWII there were more Poles in Chicago than in Warsaw, but that is no longer the case.

You might find this kind of thing for a nation in which the national capital is not the nation’s largest city. For example, there may well be more Australians in London than in Canberra.
