The Larry Sanders Show

Anyone have any fond memories of this superb television show? I would say it’s one of my favorite TV shows, if not my favorite. So I’m looking for any…

…quotes from the show.

…favorite Episodes.

…favorite actors.

…favorite characters.

…overall favorite show elements.

…what you didn’t like or would do different.

…anything show related

When I discovered the show, it was in 1998. I watched it for it’s last few episodes and there was an actress on the show (regular) I dug. Which has significant meaning, but I won’t get into that yet; I’ll see how popular the thread is first. I got to watch it all through the summer of 1998 because they reran ever episode on a Canadian station that didn’t censer anything. It played once every week in blocks of 4 episodes. That summer was the best in my life, and when I see the show, I relate it to that great time of my life.

I think the dialog and characters are so raw, you can’t help but love it. I can also relate to some of the characters; Some days I’m Arty, some days Larry, some (maybe the majority) Hank.

One of my favorite shows of all time.

Larry (to Artie): You know, talkin’ to you is like talkin’ to you.

Artie (to Phil, who has become suddenly very vocally anti-gay): You know who runs this town, don’t you?
Phil: The Jews?
Artie: The gay Jews!

The episode where a homemade porn tape of Hank’s starts circulating.
The episodes with David Duchovny.

Rip Torn

Artie, Beverly

The stylistic decision to shoot the on-air parts on video and the off-air parts on film. Genius.

You probably already know that the first season has been released on DVD.

haha, well at least one person answered.

Loved when Hank met Wu-Tang Clan.

HANK: “Where’s Dirty ol’ Bitch?”

(Not exact at all)

ARTY: “Ok, Everybody out… Larry has work do.”

HANK: “Umm, I have some old business”

ARTY: “Get the fuck out Hank”

I love how Hank sent people in to Larrys office to say he (Hank) wanted to speak with him. Then he would peak his head in and say: “Did… did you wan’t to talk to me?”

About that Hank sex video.

I think one of the girls talks dirty or says something vulgar.
Hank instructs her to wash her mouth out with… HANK!

HANK claiming he did nothing wrong: “Sex is a beautiful thing shared by two… Or more people”

Favorite Episode:

When Hank gets to host the show, is bashful and funny the first time, but turns nasty once he gets a big head about it. Artie keeps a tape of the bad episode, which he will never air, to keep Hank in line.

The Ellen Degneres episode where she sleeps with him.

Hell, they’re all good.

Quotes:
“She knows about little Mickey?!”
“You must get laid, like, never!”

I like the episode where Hank spends a week with an ordinary family, and in that time manages to fuck the wife, turn the husband into an alcoholic, and completely destroy that family.

Sarah Silverman!

Mary Lou (referring to Hank masturbating before the show): “But I thought all boxers refrained from any sexual activity before a fight.”

Hank: “YEAH! Because they’re pussies!”

Mary Lou is the gal I had a thing for, but for good reason. She reminded me of someone. That’s why I started watching it the first place.

The show was treated really, really badly over here in the UK. The BBC bought it and shoved it on to their second (minority) channel at about 11.30pm, Tuesday nights. With typical BBC dunkwit arrogance they always said “We give it a graveyard slot because it doesn’t get very good viewing figures”. Obviously, it never stood a chance of building an audience at that time of night.

Anyways…

Favourite episodes? When Hank’s father dies, and he fights hard to include some sort of tribute speech in teh show, gets his own way and then can’t think of anything to say…

When Hank starts wearing a yamulke purely because he wants to get off with a Jewish woman he knows, and then starts reading his Nazi “fan” mail…

When Larry starts dating some barely-legal-age teenager and has dinner with her and her parents…

When Larry just wants to take a leak but can’t find the time to go to the bathroom…

I also liked the episode where Shawn Colvin played ‘Polaroids’ because I’d never heard of her until then, loved the song, bought the CD and have enjoyed her music ever since!

Favourite characters: Beverly, as played by the gorgeous Penny Johnson, of whom we just do not see enough on TV! Also, I loved Janeane Garofalo, who is virtually unknown over here.

The funniest episode not yet mentioned is the one with Brett Butler. She had a sapphic fling with Janeane Garofalo’s character in the past, causing much awkwardness. The best part was the ending, where Janeane says she has been sick, Brett looks at her throat, and Larry and Artie round the corner at that exact moment.

The show as a whole is a classic of tone and timing.

The episode with Wu-tang as the musical guests is a classic. I still howl when Hank’s reading the tracks from the CD and says Shame on a Nigga.

tee hee

Favorite episode:

When Hank “accidentally” slept with Jeanie, Larry’s ex and they have the feud of the century. Favorite lines from that episode:

Larry (to Jeanie): How do you “accidentally” sleep with Hank? What…you slipped and fell on his penis?

Hank (to Larry in the men’s room): You’re always making fun of me…you never let me live anything down. Like that time I chipped my tooth on the urinal.

Larry: It was a back tooth, Hank.

And the most uncomfortable moment:
Larry (to Hank): Your a no-talent fuck!

Favorite characters:

Rip Torn as Artie. Jeaneane Garofalo as Paula (I’ve had a crush on her since she was doing stand-up). Wallace Langham as Phil. Jeremy Piven as Jerry.

Unquestionably one of the best television shows ever. The only thing close to it these days is Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”. I’m glad HBO2 still runs “TLSS”.

 I had forgotten that line. Easily one of the funniest lines ever.

Reminds me, also of the episode where Larry tries to send a fax to TV critic Tom Shales and Hank winds up with it instead. He’s convinced it is meant for him because it begins, “Dear Dumb F***.”

The remaining 5 seasons of this show cannot come out fast enough on DVD as far as I’m concerned.

Oh, and for anyone who has HBO Comedy, it airs there weeknightly at 11:30 e/p.

I think it’s “Shame the Nigga”!
