Are they trying to claim that King Arthur was the Emperor of Rome?
Hey, it’s a movie. And anyway it would be in line with medieval claims that varying kingships were “delegated” by late-Roman emperors.
No idea whether the movie is making that claim - but some Arthurian legends do feature Arthur becoming Emperor of Rome (this discussion of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s version of the mythos notes that Arthur frees Gaul from Rome http://www.arthurian-legend.com/more-about/more-about-arthur-2.php - numerous other sites mention legends of Arthur actually becoming Emperor)
The book is much better and clearer than the movie… the movie was hastily slapped-together and cut out a lot of backstory.
Though you’re kind of spoiling the ending right there in your first post.
Mods have fixed title to reflect spoilers, and have added spaces to prevent possible mouse-over spoilers in first post.
Didn’t that movie come out, like, last year?
I rented it via Netflix at least a year ago, maybe two. But I also did just see a trailer for it on the disc for the movie Outlander that was released to video somewhat recently.
I enjoyed it like I might enjoy watching a SciFi channel original, or an episode of Xena or Hercules, but it’s really not a “good” movie. The cast is pretty impressive, but the direction is uninspired and the pacing is awful. The main reason I watched it is to see the stunningly beautiful Ashwarya Rai doing her best Xena impression.
The book is much better, but the film is kind of fun, too.
And the child who should be the last emperor of Rome, after his father is killed, is spirited away and eventually becomes Uther Pendragon, Arthur’s father, iirc.
There are about a billion variants of the Arthur mythos, quite a few of them set forth justifications as to why Arthur is rightfully Roman Emperor, yes.
Several are based upon Ambrosius Aurelianus – whom Arthur is either conflated with, or said to be related to (nephew, usually). Aurelianus is often cited to have been related to a Roman Emperor, to have been of the Roman senatorial class, or to have been a Roman officer.
Even when Arthur is not set up as the successor Roman Emperor, he’s often linked to the last remnants of Roman rule in Britain. So there’s plenty of source context for the film. Unfortunately, the film sucked.
Spoilers? It’s the movie’s own trailer.
If you’re meaning my use of a spoiler box, I didn’t click on any of the links, so i didn’t know their content, and it’s been a year or two since I saw the film. Don’t know if I ever saw a trailer for it.
