It’s certainly possible that the story was made up. But he asked why he or she claimed it was illegal to film it.
I’d assume he or she said it was illegal, because he or she thought it was illegal.
Make sense?

Bricker, what’s with the “yeah, right” attitude? I think you’re a logical type who tends not to jump to conclusions without reason. So what’s pinged your BS meter here?
Nothing in spamforbrains’s anecdote seems extraordinary. It may or may not have actually happened, as with pretty much any anecdote any of us share on this board.*
And for all I know, spamforbrains may in fact be the lyingest liar that ever lied, but I have no reason at all to assume so. Do you?
What is it worth to you to cast doubt on what he/she has shared with us?
*Like how I once served hors d’oeuvres to the Mouth of Sauron. True story.
Hi John.
And “illegally?”
The most obvious possibility is that she fabricated the event.
As for the OP: agreed.
This is an insane law with some very troubling implications.
It’s politicians forcing doctors to give misinformation to their patients and forcing women to undergo unnecessary and potentially harmful procedures.
Let the doctor and patient decide what’s best.
The over-the-top description of events, combined with the false excuse for not recording it, is what pinged my BS meter. And when I asked, the story changed away from the claim of illegality without addressing it. Strike two.
It certainly could be made up. But that doesn’t change that your focusing on “illegal” is just stupid.
You find it unlikely that someone would be unfamiliar with the laws surrounding recording of conversations, and might mistakenly think that it was illegal to do so?
In a former career as a journalist, I encountered a, well, not a large number, but some number of people who were under the mistaken impression that I needed their permission to record an interview with them (most, I’m sure, were unaware they were being recorded, or didn’t care). It’s a common enough trope.
Yes, that is indeed an obvious possibly.
Just as the interpretations suggested by smithsb and Lobohan are obvious possiblies.
What made you choose to assume spamforbrains is lying?
I don’t think there’s anything “over the top” about the story, but I don’t know what your threshold is for wacky highjinks and tall tales.
I do think it’s interesting that he/she somehow met the person supposedly responsible for this bill, and would be interested in hearing who that is and how that meeting came about.
Hopefully spamforbrains will come back to expound on that, if able.
But why do you say spamforbrains made a false excuse?
Far as I can tell, he/she wished that, in spite of (mistakenly?) believing it would have been illegal, she/he had recorded the encounter, but didn’t have the wherewithal to do so on the spot.
Rather than saying “pwyeah, sure,” I’d rather ask “so who was it, and how did you meet him?”
spamforbrains, can you share this?
I think it would be very relevant to the topic.
Sure.
And in such a case, I would expect that when asked about it, such a person would say either, “Yes, it’s illegal to record without consent,” (if still under that common misconception) or “I thought, when I typed that, that it was illegal, but I now see it would not have been.”
What I would not expect is a quick turn into, “It happened so fast I couldn’t reach my phone,” with no mention of the claim of illegality.
It’s my suspicion that spamforbrains is telling a “higher truth.” That is, while the incident did not happen, it’s exactly the kind of thing that COULD happen with these kinds of people and exactly the sort of thing that needs to be said.
That was probably the true reason. That they thought it was illegal was a lesser deterrent, but the physical inability to accomplish the task was not to be overcome.
Accusations of lying are absurd. (Although I do have to wonder if Not Carlson really served hors d’ouvres to Sauron. Sauron was much more a chips and dip sort of guy.)
He or she is an anti-religion fundamentalist in the mould of Der Trihs who always seems to have a story that just happens to fit the need. Like being recruited by Moonies:
Emphasis added. Anyone with any religious leanings. :roll eyes:
Is that like the higher truth you were accessing when you lied about my position on the Mass. legislature repeatedly?
I only bring it up to show what a hypocrite you are, mind you.
There’s a huge difference between imputing a position to you based on your comfortable lack of criticism for the Massachusetts legislature as compared with your vociferous attack on Voter ID, and fabricating the occurrence of a factual event.
The former was a conclusion, based upon observed behavior, and reported that way. I didn’t claim to have read your mind, or that in a moment of unusual honesty you confessed your joy at Massachusetts’ hijinks. I said that you supported the Massachusetts because, despite numerous opportunities to do so, you said nothing critical about it.
And here, I am not saying I am certain there has been fabrication – merely that I suspect it.
So, you’re a liar?
I don’t know what pit rules are, so feel free to hit me with tentacles if you like. I have never had any political leanings. In fact, I think most/all politicians should be boiled in oil. However, over the last five years, accelerating in the last year, the GOP has launched a concerted attack on women’s rights. Being a woman, I’m kind of concerned about this. So I asked around about how to help fight the problem and recently have been doing a lot of activist stuff which is new to me. I currently, for very odd and random reasons, live in Utah, which is inhabited by a lot of brainwashed men and women who think women are maids/walking uteruses. This situation is somewhat distressing to me, since I’ve always felt my uterus was the least important part of my body and I can’t clean worth shit. I can provide photos if you don’t believe the last statement.
Ok, so moving on, I joined in the activitism. I’ve sent lots of emails, made lots of phone calls. The organizers always strictly instructed us to never record private conversations because that is illegal. There are other things they told us not to do, such as send used tampons and diapers to politicians, because apparently that is illegal as well.
The bill to require anesthesia freaked out everyone so they had a “pink protest.” I flat-out refuse to wear pink, so I kind of joined in, not in pink, and probably due to the fact I wasn’t wearing pink had the opportunity to ask the politician later in the hallway what he would feel if a woman died due to his bill and the incident occurred.
Well, that’s not telling any kind of truth. That’s just making shit up.
I certainly hope spamforbrains isn’t doing that, because that’s just not cool.
Now you’re twisting my words. I said it was the Mouth of Sauron, not the big S himself.
How would that even work?
"What doesss the Eye command, massster? "
“Crackers and pate, apparently.”
“Ssseems . . . uncomfortable.”
Spamforbrains, thanks for elaborating, despite the hostile environment.
(But hey, I’m sure you wouldn’t have waded into the Pit if you didn’t expect to get shit on your boots.)
Can you tell us who the polly was?
You can look that up. I’m afraid of liability laws.
