The LDS Church's Statement on the US Elections

Then am I supposed to lump all Muslims in with Osama bin Laden? Because people keep telling me that only crazy Tea Party people think that all Muslims are terrorists… They tell me that only the crazy Muslims are terrorists and that it is actually a very peaceful religion.

Maybe you can explain to me how your statement is different.

Dear LDS Church,

I regret that I am unable to include a GO FUCK YOURSELF in this missive. Earlier I went to the GO FUCK YOURSELF store, but found that there had been a recent run on their inventory. Please accept this slightly used Y’ALL ARE FUCKIN’ CRAZY instead.

Yours most sincerely,
BlackKnight

There isn’t a Church of Islam like there is a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I’ve always been a fan of their bottle coozies.

Lame-O, Sicks, lame. Wow, that’s the best you could do? Really. :o

That you don’t understand the distinction doesn’t mean that it’s a lame point.

It just means that I didn’t think I’d have to explain it further than that.

Have you spoken up in your church about your feelings on the treatment of gays by the Mormon church? If yes, what happened, and do you still consider yourself Mormon since they disfellowshipped you?

The ones that carried out his orders and collected a paycheck from him? You’d get no argument from me.

I thank the LDS church for their kind words, but would like to remind them that there are no gold plates and they’re wasting their lives on a religion that makes Scientology look deep.

Check out “Book of Mormon” girl JoAnna Brooks and ask her the same questions. Ask Mitch Mayne.

That’s kinda funny Troppus.

Look, this election is pretty good for me and I’m not going to get mired down in this negativity. I’m sorry you guys are bitter and I can imagine you’ve got good reasons for being so. So be it. I don’t really want to be the object of your aggression. You need to find some LDS people who actually disagree with you.

Thanks for being open-minded and welcoming with open arms and stuff. Makes me feel really good.

Ouch.

If you were LBGT, doubting or disenfranchised, shunned, or otherwise feeling uncertain and alienated, I would absolutely welcome you with open arms and help you find community with more accepting people. But you charged in with smug claims of first hand evidence regarding the post election press release, alluded to your years of experience and expertise, claimed that non-Mormons are surrounded with Mormon overseers then attempted to distance yourself from Mormon principles to support your argument. It is evidently easy for you to shrug off the Mormon principles you find distasteful while remaining in the church. It’s the LGBT people in your midst who are mired down in negativity. And fear, shame, and oppression.

Well, I’m sorry that I’m not LBGT so that I can be included in your warmth. You’ve taken my comments as smug and overbearing when I all was doing was answering others inquiries.

As a contrast I do have non-LDS and former LDS LBGT friends and parents of LBGT who still find me to be an ally and not so much the enemy. Of course, you don’t really know me and they do.

Like I said you have good reason for feeling the way you do. That is one thing I can understand. I’m glad the church stayed out of the marriage equality ballot measures. I do see progress.

People can be measured by the groups they associate with. “Muslim” doesn’t give us much information about someone’s state of mind. A billion people are Muslim, with varying degrees of craziness. “Southern Baptist” tells us a bit more information, because there is a strong tendency for Southern Baptists to have similar opinions/feelings/personality types. The more broad term “Christian” gives us about as useless information as what “Muslim” does. All sorts of people consider themselves Christian, but only a certain type of person considers themselves a Southern Baptist.

“Mormon” is kind of like that. The Mormon who doesn’t lie to outsiders about what his religion has taught him (lol @ the mark of Cain), and who doesn’t remain willfully ignorant of recent history, and who doesn’t try to whitewash the silliness from their religion’s past, and who rationally considers subjects that conflict with his ideology, is rare indeed! Mormons are a very insular group. Once you’re on the Mormon island, you’re socially isolated from mainstream humanity. You’re allowed to show your true face to fellow Mormons, but are required to wear a mask and be on your guard around anyone else. It’s the type of conditioning that nurtures an inbred and absolutely whacked culture where ridiculous, obvious lies are eagerly accepted as truth, even when it conflicts with lies told within living memory!

Lumping Mormons, a mostly socially uniform group with very few outliers, into a single whole, makes a lot more sense than trying to do the same thing for a broad, diverse group with different sects that can’t even talk to each other without fighting, like Muslims.

TLDR: your argument is flawed. The equivalency you’re trying to draw doesn’t exist.

Inactive Mormon here. I too voted blue. In fact, in CA, I voted the Party line. I registered as a Democrat eons ago and my affiliation has never changed. But then, I’m one of the 47% who have sponged off the government.
I think April’s point was that the LDS church stepped up with an appeal for the nation to come together in support of the president for the benefit of all of us. Which apparently is more than many of her Republican friends are doing.

I believe mtomm earlieer stated that previous press releases of the same type lead to the supposition that the unreleased “Romney wins” press release was pretty much like the released “Obama wins” press release. Are there indeed previous press releases from previous elections we can take a look at for comparison?

You know the church isn’t just in the USA right? Far from “socially uniform group.” That’s just silly.
This poster is dated but it’s true.

It’s not really any different from the ad campaigns the Mormon church has been running for the last few years. But yes, according to statistics, U.S. Mormons are pretty homogenous.

That same link you posted also cited stats which show Mormon converts as a more diverse group, which stands to reason. As any religion grows from a small movement to a larger organization the membership should logically diversity. We have only been established as a Church for less than 200 yrs, it takes time to diversify and grow.

Look over there!

The link shows that about 80 percent of U.S. Mormons are white. They have fewer nonwhites and immigrants than the overall population, they’re more likely to have college degrees, and less likely to marry outside their faith. All things considered, the statement that they are a a pretty uniform group is correct.

And what does it prove? The Mormons in my area and in the picture that your cite shows are diverse.
