The "Left Behind" movie - a priceless Dopefest opportunity?

One phrase: “In case of Rapture, this car will be unmanned.”

I swear, I could make a killing.

Consume? Maybe you’re going to bring brownies?

Not that I know anything about marijuana myself, having gone to boarding school. Nope:)

Perhaps the best thing to do is find a cheap theater matinée showing that doesn’t have too many people in it and quietly MST3K the hell out of it (strange pun, that)?

Nope. Senator Tim Hutchinson from Arkansas. Congressman Mark Souder from Indiana.

Yes, I realize that it doesn’t mean 30 million different readers, but not all of those who are reading this series are the throw-away fundy types. I mean, if they were, it would not have been as successful as it is. My boss, for example, is a good Catholic and certainly not a fundy, but I have seen him (and his daughter, who babysits for me) reading at least one of these books. I’m sure he’s not alone. These are the people I’m worried about.

That’s horrible. Tim is on of my Senators.

Yep. Good old upstanding, moral Tim. The same Tim that divorced his wife of, I think, 30+ years and married one of his staffers that he’d been banging.

I’m truly sorry. I remember hearing speculation (and only that) back when HRC was contemplating a US Senate run in New York that WJC, for lack of a better thing to do, would challenge Hutchinson in Arkansas in 2002.

Can you imagine both Clintons in the Senate? They’d have to recast the anti-Christ in the book/movie.

I have read several books in the series. I am NOT fundie, and have NO plans to become one. “They” can’t brainwash THIS brain, it’s already been washed by professionals.

I call the series Christian Science Fiction, and although it isn’t well written and has laughable plot twists, I look forward to the next installment. I have NOT put any money toward these, they are circulating with a few neighbors. And has nobody seen the irony of a good old fashioned Book Burning? These babies will burn REAL good.

One benefit to this series is that it DID prompt me to read Revelations, which brings up the whole “Who the Hell wrote THIS?” thread topic, and the Gnostic books, and all that potential Christianity hipocrisy subject matter.

BTW I was raised Catholic, but the Pope and I had words. He owes me money.

Tim’s brother, Asa (another proud graduate of Bob Jones U), is a Congressman from Northwest Arkansas and one of the two’s son, Jeremy, is a State Representative here in Arkansas. The role of anti-Christ has to be filled by one of them. Remember, the aC is going to present himself as a rightous man. Tim and Asa are commonly referred to as the Rightous Brothers by a couple of political columnist around here.

re: The Party
Jess, I am SO there! Are bathing suits required for the tub? Of course, you probably don’t live anywhere close to me…rats!

Bahahahahaha! ::wiping eyes:: Oh shoot, that’s a good one! Tell it to me again…bahahahaha!

Perchance, Dr. LaHaye forgot to read in one of Paul’s writings about Christians not going to court against one another.

Woops, my bad. I see the “no suing thing among Christians” was already address…
Oh well, I’m up for the party though!

If it is really a story about those who are left behind, shouldn’t there be sin? Injecting heroin while dancing and having sex? Not growing a beard or tasseling your cloaks? Killing? Death on a pale horse?

The movie doesn’t even have swearing. This one world government sounds better than heaven. Less preachy at least.

One of my favorite bumper stickers:

“In case of Rapture, can I have your car?”

(It’s probably on Olentzero’s car! ;))

I agree maidenunicorn41! Actually you really should read the books! It’s a series, and it is wonderful. The books are much better than the movie, but I like both!
It will happen

The story IS fake, fake characters, fake lives. The things that happen in the story such as the prophecies, are taken from ‘Revelations’. No one is predicting what is going to happen when the world ends, they are taking what’s in the Bible ( Revelation ) and trying to make a movie out of another book of the Bible. I think they did a very good job. Do catholics believe in the Bible? I’m not sure!

It’s a movie/and series of books that tells us what is going to happen, but it’s put in a story, and just in case we are left behind, we know what to expect and what to do.

They might rather believe in God…

Actually, there are many disagreements even among fundie Christians about the relation of the Rapture to the Tribulation. The Left Behind books, IIRC, place the Rapture at the beginning of the Tribulation (“pre-Trib Rapture”). But many other Christians believe the Rapture occurs at the end of the seven-year Tribulation (“post-Trib Rapture”), and one group I was associated with long ago found enough Scriptural support for a mid-Trib Rapture that that was their belief.

Reason I bring up all this background is that I wish to announce my conversion to the post-Trib Rapture school of thought.

I have come to believe that, once those who believe in the Rapture are indeed Raptured, the rest of us can have some peace and quiet, and will be able to accomplish many constructive good works much more easily without their interference. Persons of all faiths, or none at all, will feel equally accepted in this country, sexual orientation will no longer be grounds for discrimination, and so forth. The Rapture won’t mark the end of the Tribulation, so much as it will bring it to pass.

bunnygirl – you are welcome in my hot tub anytime – and suits are always optional.

Since this thread began I’ve actually talked to a few friends who have been so unfortunate as to see the film in question. Frankly, the reviews I’m hearing lead me to believe that if we ever got the Straight-Dope-Left Behind-‘Movie’-Bash-a-Thon off the ground we would require massive amounts of alcoholic beverages to make it through to The End.

Jess – dangling a carrot in front of her fellow dopers. OK, it isn’t a carrot, it’s a half-dozen blenders full of frozen marguaritas. Whatever. Perhaps I should also mention that, in my experience, whenever alcohol consumption goes up – the swimsuits tend to come off.

Woo Hoo!! Sounds like a hell of a party! And we get to make fun of a bad fundie movie? Bluesman and I are so there.

I was ready for this even before Jess started discussing the pleasant consequences of alcohol in conjunction with a hot tub. Now, wild horses couldn’t keep me away.

Now, when shall we have this party?

($0.02 just doesn’t buy anything anymore)

The Bible was written by humans. With or without divine inspiration, the Human mind cannot grasp the concept of a Divine Being. Mistakes were made. Personal ambition and agendas are mixed in with whatever Divine Inspiration was there. The Bible is fraught with errors (from a scientific standpoint) such as the age of the Earth, and life upon the Earth. Misinterpretaions and omissions exist. God didn’t create all life in six rotations of the earth about it’s axis. Metaphors and stories to explain difficult concepts to an uneducated people are being taken at face value in today’s educated Fundie society (and some non-Fundies, I presume). The Church has a RIPE history of conducting crimes against humanity in the name of God in the last 2001 years or so.

And when the Hell is this naked-in-the-hot-tub-alcohol-drinkin-book-burnin-videotape-erasing-ten-commandment-busting party?

Don’t tell Tim LaHaye that. He might have to cancel his Trib newsletter
