All right, I always knew Oreos were not health food. Last year, I read that foodstuffs containing trans-fat were the latest no-nos; trans-fat being shortening, margarine and other hydrogenated vegetable fats. The latest is that Oreos are about as full of trans-fat as a cookie can get. That yummy creme filling is nothing more than shortening flavored with sugar.
Well, I haven’t eaten Oreos in a few years, and I don’t plan to restart, but Jebus! Can’t the scientists leave the junk food alone?
Well, they used to use sugared lard for the creme filling, and changed over because vegetable shortening was supposedly much healthier. Now that lard is widely suspected of getting a largely bum rap, maybe they’ll switch back. Oreos’ll be a ton tastier if they do!
In all seriousness, and I wish I could find a cite but am too lazy:
A longitudinal research study followed a number of men with high cholesterol. Half followed therapies to lower the cholesterol, but after the study period the death rate was the same in both groups. Those who lowered their cholesterol did have fewer deaths from vascular disorders such as heart attacks. This was offset by an increase in deaths by violence and accident. The theory was that there is a relationship between cholesterol and testosterone, and that those who lowered their cholesterol took more chances and were more aggressive. Again, just a recollection, take it for what it’s worth, which is probably not a lot.
