The Littlest Groom

I’ve only watched the first eighteen minutes of it, but wow…I have never seen a creepier show.

What’s everyone else think of it?

Oh, and that Mika girl is very cute!

Why is it creepy? Short people want to fall in love and get married. BFD.

Really? Do they go to heaven as well, skutir? I’m aware that short people want to fall in love and get married; however, that wont happen on Fox. A show where short people plot against one another in an attempt to get prizes seems a bit creepy to me. Especially when the intro seems so positive and hopeful. Then again, I’m a racist ass.

I didn’t see the fist episode, but I didn’t sense the show was out to mock short people from what’s I’ve heard about it. It seemed to actually stand for something good. Short people are often “Munchkins” or “Mini-Me’s” in entertainment. I don’t find it offensive, but it would be nice to see a small person act, uh… human in front of the camera. Even if it is on some stupid dating show, it’s good to their image to the masses broadened.

Still, ya gotta admit … most of the people who tuned into the show probably did so because they wanted to see The Bachelor with midgets.

I’m fascinated by midgets. I dunno why. There was a movie out recently that had a midget just doing his regular life, and now this reality show. I think it’s great to let people see that they have lives just like everyone else. They fall in love like everyone else. They still fascinate me.

psss I think the “m” word is not cool with little people.

I watched all of it. I was struck by the fact that these people seemed to be the least fame-whorish of any reality, dating-show contestants I’ve seen so far. I think it’s possible that most of them really are just looking for love.

I thought the little groom was hot. He really did have nice eyes.

If those were not some of the most boring little people…

I wonder how/why the words midget and dwarf became so demonized. To me the term “little people” sounds so much more condescending, but otoh if they prefer to be called “pituitarily challenged mythological creature Americans” it’s fine by me.

I’m wondering if they’ll be a twist in this one- in the final episode they’ll find out he’s gay or not really a little person or something. Or maybe he’ll find out the girls are all drag queens.

I had a professor who was a gay little person. Of all the dirty tricks God could have pulled- he could at least have spared him one or the other.

What does being a racist ass have to do with anything? You may be one, but it’s not germaine to the topic of this thread, or to my post. I called no names, I merely asked a question.

Let’s say I walk into my office one morning, and shudder, and say, “What’s with all the women on campus? It’s creepy.”

I’m asked to explain myself.

“Fine, I’m a sexist jerk!” I exclaim, perhaps upsetting a shelf of books. “I just think it’s creepy that students in general have to pay such high tuition,” I explain, in a not-too-credible amendment.

I merely asked why it was creepy. There’s nothing in your post to suggest WHY you find it creepy, so a reader is forced to conclude that it’s “creepy” because it involves (a) midgets and (b) sex. However, I did not want to make that conclusion, so I asked a direct question. If you don’t want people even ASKING for fucking CLARITY, then post more than ten words in your OP and explain yourself upfront.

I heard that some of the contestants will be regularly sized folks. I don’t know if they KNOW they will be dating little people, but I suppose the drama will be in whether the little people will want to date regularly sized people.

What are “regularly sized people”? Is that like when the tailor keeps checking your inseam?

I watched the show last night and the term the little people used was “average-sized people” to refer to “regular” people.

And, yes, they did bring in 3 average-sized women (and they were definitely hotter than average) at the end of the episode to compete against the five little women for the bachelor’s affection.

Maybe I’m twisted, but I can’t help but wonder about his anatomy. Seems that he and the average sized women wouldn’t be “compatible.”

Also, I didn’t watch it. I thought it would be offensive.

Oh good God, yes, mixed pairs have compatible anatomy.

Dating reality shows are stupid no matter who is on them. This one strikes me as either exceptionally stupid or a rare actual nod to the fact that dwarfs are fully operational humans – in an exceptionally stupid setting.

“Midget” is considered rude largely because it comes straight from the freak show tradition in the late 1800s. I don’t think too many people are offended by “dwarf.” I don’t like “little person” either, but it’s at least a small step up from “midget.”

I didn’t see the first part, but I’ve heard that it’s not really all that bad, offensivity-wise. The producers did get in touch with LPA to try to avoid offending people.

So, you think he’s hung like an average guy? I doubt it. That’s what I meant by compatibility.

I found the show much less offensive than I thought I would. It played exactly like any other dating reality show, with no real concessions to the height of the participants. The producers did consult with the Little People of America to ensure sensitivity to their concerns.

The preferred term for describing people of short stature (under 4’10") is little people. Dwarf is also acceptable for people with achondroplasia and certain other genetic conditions. Not all little people are dwarves – for instance the woman in The Littlest Groom with the piercings is just extremely short. Midget is a term that was used in the past primarily to describe little people who were displayed as freaks, and is therefore considered offensive.

I’m rooting for Maxie.

I thought there was a difference between the two, namely that midgets were “miniature” in the sense that their bodies are in proportion but smaller than the average human (e.g. Tom Thumb), and dwarfs have extremities that are proportionally too small (e.g., Danny DeVito).

After checking dictionary.com, yup:

dwarf: a. An abnormally small person, often having limbs and features atypically proportioned or formed.
midget: Offensive. An extremely small person who is otherwise normally proportioned.

Note: I’m not arguing that either of these is acceptable, just that they refer to different things.

Yes I do think he is “hung” like an average male. The assumption that he is not is ignorant. Little people have normal genetailia.
