The "Longest Election Campaign in Modern Canada" Thread

So not every new thing is good, I guess.

Hell, we shouldn’t even have mail delivery five days a week. Christ, it’s the 21st century. The 25% of Canadians who still get mail service to their door can join the rest of us who don’t.

I agree. I have a community mailbox and only go to it if I’m expecting something or happen to remember that I haven’t checked it in a long time. The only reason the community mailbox rollout was put on hold is that it’s been grossly mismanaged, not that it’s a bad idea.

And the idea of community mailboxes may well come back. Or we may move to to mail delivery fewer times per week. Or some other solution, BASED ON FACTUAL ANALYSIS, instead of knee-jerk autocratic decisions by a bunch of political ideologues.

This is what The Harper Government1 finally came down to: So many of their decisions were based on “gut feelings” rather than logical analysis that we came to distrust EVERYthing that came out of the PMO. (And pretty much every decision came out of the PMO).

And like everything else that came from the lads in short pants, it was badly handled. They simply got way, way too arrogant.

  1. And thank God we have The Canadian Government back. If anyone calls it “The Trudeau Government”, I will punch them in the neck.

Seconded. I can see the logic in it. It could have been done much better.

We had a community mailbox. Life was good.

Then Canada Post gave us a new community. Life was no longer good.

I can’t recall all the particulars, but in sum, I didn’t receive any of my own mail for much of a summer, I received the mail belonging to dozens of other people, and Canada Post’s district manager quit and was not replaced for quite some time. What finally worked was boxing up the mail that had been misdirected to me and mailing to to Deepak Chopra. Problem solved as far as receiving mail goes, but it’s taking time for shipping databases to recognize my “in Canada Post’s mind only” community, and none of my ID matches my mailing address, so sometimes vendors will not ship to me.

Summary? Canada Post is fucked up, but that being said, it beats the alternative.

I heard a professor of economics on the radio who said it’s actually about a 33% to 66% split. Cutting direct delivery to the remaining 33% will save Canada Post $500 million per year: nothing to sneeze at.

He also predicts that after the Liberal government studies this community mailboxes will be reinstated. There will be no justification for a two-tiered system.

Initially it was pitched very poorly by ignoring the needs of handicapped and seniors, by being very insensitive as to placement of the boxes, and by mitigating traffic, shoulder and litter issues.

Yes, I’m from the West. I have a deep suspicion of Liberals and especially those with the name of Trudeau.

My post office solution is one they should have just initiated without telling everyone, just deliver the mail three times a week! I mean, who the hell would know? Instant 40% labour saving!

They couldn’t think this up themselves? Sheesh!

Well, it’s good that we’ve established that. I thought I might have misunderstood something.

My point being is that it isn’t without merit if you are from Alberta.

Since none of this is now election-related, we should probably start a new thread or two and put a fork in this one.

CUPW would have known and would have spammed the media with the injustices.

We could start a new one called Longest Post-Election Thread in Canadian History. It could last until the next federal election.

How long until the Harpers were going to take away your right to vote?

Something to track what they say they are going to do vs, what they actually do. For whatever party that happens to be in power, not just these clowns.

Well, we do have a catch-all thread for all things Canadian, eh? (Initiated yearly, but since Cat Whisperer turned feral we haven’t had much content update.)

I already can’t vote as I no longer live in Canada. I assume that is what you are referring to. I don’t always agree with what the government does, btw. eg. They should have stopped the war on drugs years ago. Hopefully, Trudeau can fix it now. Sometimes you need to clear out the old to let new ideas in.

I probably should have asked this in that thread, but since you mentioned her, does anyone know why Cat Whisperer has been silent since June?

Judicial recounts have been ordered in 3 ridings:

  • Edmonton Mill Woods (Liberal winner, Conservative runner-up)
  • Montmagny–L’Islet–Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup (Liberal winner, Conservative runner-up)
  • Barrie–Springwater–Oro–Medonte (Conservative winner, Liberal runner-up)

Not enough to affect the balance of power, but interesting.
