The Lord of the Rings Oracle???

Oh, my, I am dumbfounded.

As I was a-walking thru Newcastle Upon Tyne,
I came across an ole bookseller in the market.
You’ll never believe what I found, it made me stop without a sound:
the Lord of the Rings Oracle!

The book proposes to use our beloved book as an oracle, apparently in the way the Bible is sometimes used. Somehow I don’t feel Old Man Tolkien would have liked this. What do you think?

If Tolkien were still alive, he’d probably bitch slap the person who wrote that…
…after he was done with Peter Jackson, of course.

Tolkien even objected to those who tried to find hidden meanings in his works by more conventional means. That combined with his catholicism makes me believe that he would not have liked that too much.

P.S. I did that bible oracle once. Read Deut. 18 10-12. I never did that again. Seriously.

I not only have the LOTR Oracle (from the bookstore discount table for $7) but also the LOTR Tarot deck, which I am also sure JRR would greatly frown upon! L What’s next?- the Narnia Ouija board?!?

Or maybe the Star Wars Tarot?

[Mysterious tone]Your card is Han Solo Frozen in Carbon. Someone’s out to get you, someone who may have some feelings against you. Did you pay your bills? But don’t worry, some in-law will get you out of trouble. Remember to smile when they tell you to freeze, frowns and panied looks don’t look so good in portraits, especially life-sized ones.[/Mysterious tone]

I’m a collector of tarot and oracle cards. Lots of them have literary and artistic themes. There are actually two different Lord of the Rings- themed decks. You found the better one- there’s also a really ugly one.

Some people use them for reading, but lots of people buy them for their artistic value, too. Even tarot readers tend not to prefer decks like this for reading, unless they’re doing some sort of Tolkien party.

If you found that disturbing, you probably don’t want to know about the decks with themes like:

Cyber Age Adventures
Rock and roll music
Shakespeare
Bosch
Vertigo Comics
Hello Kitty
Babylon 5
Star Trek
The Wizard of Oz
Sailor Moon
Leonardo da Vinci
Walt Disney
Cute Widdle Teddy Bears
Alcoholic beverages
Computer programming

I messed up a couple of those links. Sorry. Most of them are okay.

The LOTR Oracle has pondered your question deeply.
Your question was:

> O great and powerful LOTR Oracle, whose boots I am not
> worthy to lick, bestow your great wisdom upon me and
> tell me: Who would win in a fight between Gandalf the White
> and Magneto from the X-Men ?

And in response, thus spake the Oracle:

} The X-Men ? Don’t make me laugh, supplicant. How can
} you even think to compare a second-rate comic book
} franchise with one of the greatest literary minds of the twentieth
} century? One “You shall not pass!” from Gandalf, and the
} self-proclaimed Master of Magnetism would be fried to a crisp.
} Doubt my word? Just look at how many d6 your average fireball
} spell will do in the hands of a high-level magic-user! Particularly
} in 1st Edition, before they wimped out and put that 10d6 cap in
} place. Cast from the fingers of Gandalf the White, a fireball
} spell will detonate with the force of a small thermonuclear device.
} Magneto’s precious “electromagnetic force shield” might as well
} be a paper sack, for all the good it’ll do him.
}
} You owe the Oracle a full-color reprint of X-Men issues 32-40.
