The lost art of Letter Writing - for your MMP consideration

OK, I’m home.

I guess I don’t understand the big deal about ads - I scroll right past them as soon as I open any window. Someone mentioned audio? I don’t have my speakers on unless I’m specifically want to listen to something. Of all the things in life to get upset about, banner ads aren’t even on my radar.

I’ve been up since 2:30AM! I started thinking about my daughter’s wedding plans (she finally settled on a venue) and I couldn’t get back to sleep. So I’m beat. But I’ve made a few lists and I’m getting some organization in line - yay. So I need to talk to the kid about some questions, and the planning goes forward. I suggested elopement, but she didn’t buy that. Rotten kid.

Glad the week is almost over. It’s all about getting to Firday!

Hopefully hopefully hopefully Complicated Roommate will finish rebuilding my computer tonight. I have got to start working on my papers. I’m not even going to bother sending my updated proposal to my sociolinguistics professor–the paper’s due in a week and I don’t want her to peg me as the slackass I am.

Gah, end of semester stress. Can it be December 10th now please?

Glad you’re ok mmmmmmmmms! CO detectors are a really good idea. We have one in our apartment, and I like to look at it once in a while just to make sure it still say 0.

Today’s not going so well. I found out that I screwed something up about a month ago, and it’s a Bad Thing ™. It’s probably going to cause some ill will among our customers, and we pride ourselves on one of the highest satisfaction rates in the industry. So anything that hurts that is bad. And it could mean lower sales for the last week or so, and we’re already behind our forecast. So now everyone up the chain of command will have to be informed. Ugh. Fortunately, I have an awesome boss who’ll just say something to the effect of “Mistakes were made” and won’t throw me under the bus, but it still sucks.

And I banged my hand really hard on a cabinet and can already see a bruise forming. :frowning:

Good thing I’d already scheduled a massage for later today.

Hope it gets fixed soon, mmms!

It really amazes me how some people go way out of their way to be rude and judgemental around here (the SDMB in general, not the MMP). Blech.

So cold, don’t wanna leave the house.

 , mms! I second the vote for the CO2 detector. We have one; this house leaks like such a sieve that it’s pretty pointless, but we have one anyway. They’re not expensive, and they can literally save your life.

MBG, I’d second the vote for something small and showing he’s thinking of her, not just generic candy or perfume. Of course, I’d first the vote for marriage counseling, so you probably don’t want to add my input to the collection.

I just had a happy interruption to my dull and boring work – my new work toy arrived, a 19" monitor! Wow. That’s all I can say. Wow! It’s really nice. And it’s BIG! I’m greatly looking forward to having that fast expanse of screen in front of me! Of course, in crawling around under my desk to reach the back of the CPU to hook it up, I managed to knock my keyboard plug out. :smack: I love my desk, but it is massively inconvenient when it comes to hooking anything up to the back of the CPU; it’s heavy wood, and has thick slats at inconvenient locations. So I can either break my wrist or my elbow trying to reach back there.

And we aren’t even discussing the fact that the to-this-point half-dead sensor nerves in one quadrant of my bioknee since the surgery have been coming to life the past few days, so were not pleased at my crawling on it. Neither was my head, when I bonked it on the keyboard tray. Twice. :smack:

But have I mentioned my lovely new monitor is big?

Another FireFox user here. So tell us what the banners look like.

li-li, sounds like you got a good deal on the bras. The main thing is convenience and comfort, right?

bobbio, so glad you escaped with just wounded pride.

Jeepers, ems! That is downright scarey!!!

fcm, I gave The Princess[sup]TM[/sup] the option of wedding money or equivalent towards down payment on her house. She took the house. OTOH, she can still hit up the Klingon.

pie, OUCH!! Isn’t it Christmas Pie you’re supposed to stick your thumb into???

Don’t beat yourself up, taxi. Everybody makes mistakes.

Oh, and mgb? This isn’t a moralizing suggestion, just a practical one. I’d tell any cheating “buddy” to just keep me out of it because otherwise it may come back to bite me on the ass some day. Just sayin is all…

Well thank Og that Willy-Nilly Thursday is nearly over and tomorrow is FIRDAY!!! I’m off to buy some tequila for some “yellow snow” cones we are serving at our Bah Humbug office party tomorrow.

Toodles!

Tupug

Whew, it’s -almost- Firday! Thank Og.

So now we get both ads at the bottom and top? I don’t so much mind the ads, although I will confess to finding those animated and sound activated ones annoying.

I need a DeskBa too, MBG! Or maybe a FileBa? Honestly, my time and attendance sign in/out sheets (and the accompanying leave slips, et al) were taking up so much room in my file drawer that I had to clear out another file drawer just for them. Naturally I had loads of junk in that other drawer, and I had to move around (and also -toss out-) a bunch of other stuff to make room. It’s much better now, and my desk is even tidier … well… tidier than it was before.

LiLi, when is your due date? December or January? You do seem to be nesting already. FCM, glad to hear that FCD found out he was taking too much of the wrong med–whew, glad that he wasn’t sick or it didn’t make him sick. Ems, so lucky that the heating contractor found that crack!! Carbon monoxide poisoning is so deadly and there’s no smell! :frowning: Hopefully they’ll be able to fix it quickly for you.

Happy almost Firday, folks.

My husband’s uncle gave his girls the same option. They took the weddings.

What we’re going to spend on this wedding would, maybe, be 3 months rent - hardly a downpayment. It won’t match the $35 my sweetie and I spent, but she’s not going crazy. In fact, she was being just a tad too frugal about some things.

I wish she’d wait a year - this graduation/wedding/move all at once is what’s going to kick our butts. But we’ll survive. Although I may be grey when it’s all done.

I think I need more than a DeskBa. What I need is a wife. The old-fashioned kind, to cook and clean. But not pop out ankle biters because they just make more of a mess and distract the wife from her cooking and cleaning.

I forgot to sympathize with your burnt finger, Pie. Ouchie! Burns on the hands are extra-painful. Take good care of it, okay? Which I realize is a challenge in your line of work, but all the more necessary because of that, I’d say.

Is it bedtime yet?

The main reason was that the nuts got beat up something fierce in their around the globe voyage, so they were dyed red to help conceal the bruising.

Now, nearly all pistachios eaten in the US were grown in California, so the time from tree to you is quicker, and the overall handling of the nuts has improved over the years, so they don’t need to be dyed, although they’re still available dyed red (and green at Christmastime) for those that cling to messy traditions.

Iran is still the world’s top producer of pistachios with about 70% of the world export market, followed by the US with a comparatively paltry 9% of the world market. (Sounds like we eat most of what we grow!)

I wasn’t offered a down payment, but if I were, I’d probably have taken it. Mmm, well, maybe- when we married we weren’t in a position to apply for a mortgage. Anyway, I think my wedding cost $3000 for everything. Or maybe less. Maybe $2000?

Ouch, taxi.
MBG, I’d ask to be left out of the decision process, too. I’d have a hard time not whacking him over the head- you’re more easygoing.
I should do the long-promised simple stirfry for Mr. Lissar’s lunches, but I don’t feel like eating it. It feels like a cornbread and chili night. I think I have some chili in the freezer. Cornbread for sure. And chili or some kind of soup.

I’m due Jan. 8th, although goodness knows when it’ll really be. I’ll probably post to let y’all know when I go into labour. I’m not nesting that hard- I’ve been home a month, and this is the first time I’ve mopped.

Thanks for all the thoughts!

I just got off the phone with the warrenty people - I have to pay $1500 in out of pocket for things the plan doesn’t cover. This includes a crane to lift the unit on/off the roof, disposal fees and altering the gas inlet duct which is no longer up to code. However the kicker is that $650 of the $1500 is some CA mandated duct inspection that is not required anywhere else!

I have the money but it was earmarked for wedding money :frowning: oh well at least the heating guy caught it and I end up with a brand spanking new energy efficient HVAC unit installed. Oh and I am alive to tell the tale!

eta: Just got off the phone with my Dad and he is going to lend me half the money for the out of pocket stuff. Yay! The parents are also grateful to have me alive to tell the tale

It’s 6:45 p.m. and I’m going to bed in 15 minutes to end this crappy day.

Wow! Go away for a few hours and Bobbio puts a hole in the Nerdmobile while mmmmmmmms discovers carbon monoxide. Add that to the burning porch incident and we have quite enough life-threatening drama for one week, thankyewverymuch. Can’t forget FCD’s cranked up meds, either.

My big drama du jour was that I couldn’t remember getting my monthly bus pass in the mail. I dug through a couple of envelopes when I got home and VOILA! the December bus pass revealed itself. Yawn.

If given the down payment vs wedding option, I’d pick down payment every time.

I want a big new monitor, too!!! Not that I actually use my desktop with any frequency. Really need to get working on the replacement plan, though.

Interesting background on the red pistachios.

I’m missing lots of comments I meant to make, but I need to run some errands and then clean up some again.

Back after a while.

GT

CutiePie, sorry about your thumb, I know how painful it is to burn your thumb, I did that a couple weeks ago myself.

Not much going on here. I’m hoping for snow soon. It seems odd to be almost December and not have any snow yet.

I’m working this evening. So far I have seen two people in the lab. I have a feeling it’s going to be a very quiet night. I’m here for another 4 hours too. Hopefully I can find stuff to keep me occupied.

Greetings, MMPers!

Yeah, I know it’s Thursday, but I’m just gettin’ back to this thread. Been busy.

Anyhow, going to pick out a Christmas tree tonight after dinner. Boyfriend says he found a good one: a very tall, open fir. I’m game.

Christmas decorations are up, except for the tree. Got a big-ass Esskay Silver Label ham in the oven, with fresh stringbeans on the side and a sugar free, lo-carb chocolate mousse pie for dessert. Dammit, I’m gonna ace this cooking thing if it kills me!!

Working on my third (or maybe fourth?) neat bourbon, and the working day is fading away quite pleasantly.

Hope you all are having a good evening. If I can I’ll post pics of my VERY FIRST LIVE TREE IN MY APARTMENT!!

Later!

What with all the accidents in this thread I’m scared to get in my car to go anywhere, what with the snow and occasional ice that remains on the roads here and there even though they plowed this morning. But I managed to run a couple of small errands today and didn’t slide into a wall, so hopefully I won’t tomorrow, either, since I have to go apply for a couple of jobs.

It looks like winter! We just need another foot of white stuff to really complete the look.

Girly TMI – today I have had the worst cramps I’ve had in years. I’m feeling a bit better now, but damn, cramps suck. If it weren’t for ibuprofen I’m not sure what I’d have done.

My roommate is never here. I mean, he leaves for work before 8 and often doesn’t come back before 8 in the evening. I am not complaining, but I’ve never been the sort of person who is never home and I don’t quite get why anybody would want to be. It does mean I still have the run of the place most of the time!

I got to my new store. It’s a mess. the help desk locked up the wrong register. I have to be at work at 0500 tomorrow.

Cite? I’m glad you’re OK.

BBBobbio, glad you did hurt your self.

CutiePie, Ow! The signs look good, though.

Hello everyone. They’re threatening us with snow again. Yeah, I’ll believe it when I see it. Frankly, I’d rather not see it.

Hoo-kay! Lots of accidents/incidents/owies are occuring amongst our Mumpers. Take care of yourselves for pete’s sake! Seriously, I’m glad that things weren’t more serious.

The performance review went well and I was top blocked all the way down. That’s always nice to see, but I always fret. When I told my husband, he laughed and said he expected no less. He doesn’t understand why I worry about that. I told him I never take that stuff for granted, because the first time you do, is the first time you receive a very unpleasant surprise.

I guess I should see about cooking up some chop-chop. I’m not really all that hungry, but the family is, and they’ve got to eat.

New store, doggio? You kind of mentioned it in passing the other day, but…details?

Congrats on the performance review, Taters!

I’m gonna read for a while, then beddie bye.

Tomorrow’s Firday!!! (<-genuine typo!)
