"The Macedon Youth"

Waaay back in the 1980s, I was part of a Victorian carolling group that went around to shopping malla and Fisherman’s Wharf, singing Victorian drinking songs and Christmas Carols. We were associated with the Dickens Faire, and we made a pretty penny.

There was a song we did called “The Macedon Youth,” about Alexander The Great. I would love to hear this song done again, but I can’t find it on YouTube. It’s a simple round. Does anybody have a video of this song?

“The Macedon youth left behind him this truth,
that nothing was done with such thinking
He drank and he fought
and he got what he sought,
and the world ws his own by fair drinking,
He washed his great soul
with a plentiful bowl,
He cast away trouble and sorrow
His mind did not run
of what was to be done,
for he thought of today, not tomorrow.”

I can’t give you a video of the song, but can tell you that the song comes from the play Brennorait, written by Sir John Suckling.
