The "Mad Scientist" toy set...how did the chemistry work?

Pardon my posting, but I was wondering…back in the late 80s, I had a Mad Scientist Monster Lab playset. You used it by molding green clay-like stuff onto a small toy “monster” skeleton, and then dipping the completed monster into a little plastic tank of water (to which you added some “Monster Flesh Remover” powder) which, as the name implied, boiled the hapless creature’s flesh away in a gloriously gruesome way.

Naturally, it was a big hit at my house.

Unfortunately, the company went out of business after a while, and stopped making the “refill” kits of Monster Flesh and Flesh Remover. And from that day on, I’ve wondered two things:

  1. What WAS that stuff they used in the kit? And,

  2. How can I make a substitute at home?

Can anyone help me out?

Well, thanks for your time,
Ranchoth

I Googled for “Monster Flesh” ingredients, and found recipes for what is essentially Pla-Doh with baking soda in it. The “Monster Flesh Remover” (a powder) was probably citric acid or something like it; when dissolved in water, the resulting acid solution would cause the baking soda to fizz, disintegrating the “flesh.”

You insensitive jerk. All I ever wanted when I was a kid was a Mad Scientist Monster Lab Playset and here you go posting about how much fun you had with yours.

Ya know, I think I had one of these. I remember throwing globs of the skin in the vat to watch it boil.

Only lasted a couple hours. After that never got any refills and the toy ended up in the dumpster.

My favorite was “Hordac Slime” from He-Man. That was Da Poop!

Having taken it from my equipment closet, I discover the following-

Mad Scientist Secret Froth Formula Packets (SN 3375-9568)
are labled on the reverse
"Baking Soda 1 [sup]1[/sup]/ [sub]2[/sub] grams

Mad Scientist Powdered Monster Flesh Remover (SN 3375-9558)
“Citric Acid 3 grams”

BTW-I Awakened duuring my first semester at college. At that time, my renewed interest in science led me to study many of my old toys. The Mad Scientist Monster Lab Set functions mostly on Sleeper science. However, the Living Ice is in fact a synthetic lifeform. Exposing it to Ether will revive it. It is roughly the equivalent of an amoeba. It responds excellently to enhancement. A Scientist with but a basic knowledge of Biology, Psychology, or Ephemerology can turn Living Ice into the equivalent of a Putty Buddy. There is one important difference. A Putty Buddy is greatly aligned with entropic forces and tends to be bad tempered. Nice Ice, as I call the result of my work, is a creature of dynamism. Nice Ices tend to be kind and affectionate.

For those interested, my initial findings shall be published in an upcoming issue of Paradigma.

Living Ice? Putty Buddy? What are these of which you speak?

If you make any Ice Nine, could I please have a piece? I’ll return your thermos.

MonsterFlesh-was a Mad Scientist product. “Throw MonsterFlesh at a wall and it sticks!” Green MF came with the Lab Set.

LivingIce-was also a Mad Scientist product. “Roll LivingIce into a ball and it bounces!” Clear LI came with the Lab Set. LI is and odd, rubbery substance. The warmer LI is, the stickier it gets.
PuttyBuddy-The PB is a synthetic organic made with non-dynamic Science. Think of Flubber (the new kind from the Robin Williams fil) having an evil twin made of Silly Putty. These things stretch into ropes, nets, whips and other things. My Colleagues and I were nearly defeated bv a squad of mutates wielding PB’s. Fortunately, Professor Scorpio discovered that PB’s are vulnerable to fire. As they burn, PB’s emit anguished, high-pitched wails.
