The Make Something Thread

I’m sure I’m not the only one with a long list of creative projects I’d like to work on. I find it’s easier to actually do things if there’s an expectation of it getting done. Perhaps you feel the same way. So would anyone else be interested in having a weekly thread where we could post our projects-in-progress and get critique / comments / encouragement?

(I couldn’t decide if this would be Cafe Society or MPSIMS, so I flipped a coin)

Nobody?

I’d be interested - I’m trying to make a bunch of pottery projects, and they’re coming along very slowly.

I’d be interested. I had thought about trying a craft exchange here at some point but I just haven’t had the time to work on a craft let alone organize an exchange, and there’s no way I could manage the Thing A Day but maybe I could try a Thing A Week (as long as it doesn’t have to be finished).

Although, it’s kitten season and fostering kittens takes a bit of my time, would kittens count as a project?

Here’s what I figured:

  • Projects can absolutely be whatever you want

  • You don’t have to finish anything in a week, but you should work on it. I dunno, set aside a few hours in the week.

  • You should, however, post some pictures or at least a progress report. Otherwise, how are we supposed to encourage you?

  • Unless you’re doing kitties, in which case, dude, PICTURES!

  • I thought this would also be a good way to get critiques. I know once you get out of school (like I’m doing), you don’t get much feedback and the best feedback isn’t just ‘wow! that looks awesome!’

At the moment I’m really wiped out because of finals and graduation, but I’d love to get this started next week.

I’m working on a fun little project. I have (a lot of) family coming to town in July. I decided to build horseshoe pits in my back yard. It’s basically a frame of 3’ wide X 5’ long, X 6" deep with a sturdy backstop. Phase 2 will be adding lights to play at night. Phase III will be adding a bench or two, maybe a table for a beer or three. I built the first frame last night.

I’ll play. Once I get my macro-lens skills up to par.

So, Silver Tyger Girl, are you going to start a series of threads, one per week/month/some unit of time, to check up on progress? Is this going to be the thread for everything?

I suspect that it’s easier for someone to jump in later if there’s a separate thread for each unit of time.

Anyway, I’d be willing to jump in and work on my multiple cross-stitch projects that are half done, but not until next week (I have a lot of paperwork right now). Unless the “something” I make can be “make my house less cluttered”, which is definitely a project, but isn’t so much creating something.

I’m in!

Currently, I’m working on knitting a baby blanket, which I MUST finish before I’m due, or it’ll never get done. I’ll post pictures later (can’t get to Flickr at work), but it’s in 4 large squares, with a border and some fun little circle details. I’ve finished two of the squares so far, and it’s completely do-able if I actually work on it regularly.

I also have a few other knitting projects waiting in the wings to get working on, once this one is done, so it would be beneficial if I got this one completed sooner rather than later.

Sure thing, I’ll play.

Right now I’m trying to finish a bunch of quilt projects I’ve had sitting around for a while. I finished one last week, another just needs binding, and others are in various stages of completion.

Also I’m embroidering a smocked baby daygown (because I’ve never made one before and I wanted to), and I have an ongoing cross-stitch sampler project with tons of fun weird stitches in it.

I recently made up a list of sewing projects for the summer. It’s kind of long.

It’s creating order and serenity!

That it is. You have no idea how disordered and insane it was. The “slob reform” threads? Nothing on the clutter that was/is. Never any filth. Just copious clutter.

I have some serious slob reforming to do myself over the summer…I’m just waiting for school to be over!

Count me in. I gotta get stuff out of my head and into production.

I figured on a separate thread every week, kinda like the MMP.

I don’t have the time right now to work on anything except packing up for my move next month, but I’ll be following the threads and jumping in when my world gets a little less hectic. I have photo albums to make and I need to get started! Not to mention how much I’d love to start writing again.

Maybe all you creative folks will be a good influence on me and inspire me to get to work.

Once a week sounds good to me. Is gardening stuff included? Cause I’m doing a lot of that right now - I just finished digging the holes for my hedge.

Yup.

I may change the name to ‘The Do Something Thread’, probably with a date.

I think my first project will be to finally get my etsy site going. I’m going to be doing graphic design and I have to finish up the examples.

Oooh, me!

  • Finishing the monogram on the handkerchief with the hand-crocheted lace border, for my sister’s birthday a week from Saturday. (I did the border and monogram in black, by the way, which she pre-approved and which looks chic as hell, but do you think it’s a little too daring because of the traditional association with mourning?..

And yes, my kid sister does habitually carry lace-bordered handkerchiefs. I asked her what she uses these dainty wisps of handmade lace and linen for, and she replied “sweat rags”. I like my sister. And she likes my hand-crocheted lace borders because they look delicate but launder tough.)

  • Finishing the toy hammock I’m crocheting with some leftover cotton, wondering what to do if I run out before it’s done. Getting another ball of cotton defeats the purpose of using up the leftovers.

  • Finishing the patchwork baby quilt of T-shirt patches for a friends’ daughter who’s like TWO now, and I’ve been bad about keeping in touch because I’ve been meaning to send this goddamned quilt. I MUST finish that, you have to nag me.

I’d like to give it a try. I really loved Thing-A-Day, but it is quite a bit of pressure, and the thirty minute limit kept me from creating the type of things I might’ve. My problem is motivation, and something like this might just do the trick!
