The manly weepers - What films are OK for men to cry while watching?

I went a little misty at the end of Return of The King. The farewell scene (at the dock), although a bit “long in the tooth”, I found quite moving, and got a little teary eyed.

But then I don’t feel so bad since Sean Astin’s Sam cried almost through the whole damn trilogy!

Q

How about Pride of the Yankees?

Last night, I got a little watery and stiff-jawed at the end of The Last Samurai.

You have your honor, now let me have mine.

Edward Scissorhands
Life is Beautiful
Schindler’s List

Good Will Hunting. The “it’s not your fault” scene gets me every time.

Edward Scissorhands. I (conveniently) forgot about that one. Definitely some choke up tears for that ending

blink What?

Man, the only time I’d cry at that one is if someone forced me to watch it again.

I’ll second Return of the King, but the moment that got to me is when Aragorn said, “My friends, you bow to noone,” and then he and everyone else bowed to the four Hobbits.

Kills me every damn time!

Rudy

I’ve posted this one before, but here goes. Years ago, I went to the movies to see The Champ with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder. At the end of the movie, I saw the guys hiding behind the snack bar napkins, mumbling something about “allergies”. I just smiled and walked out. (I’m female btw.)

Despite Notre Dame beating GT, the movie gets me every time.

More recently though I’ve begun tearing up at Cinderella Man, I related Russel Crowe’s going off to fight to my mom’s going for her procedure and it was getting to me.

The original Goodbye Mr. Chips.

Big Fish got me. I apparently had (have) some unresolved issues with my father and that movie poked a big stick right into a nest of them.

The other movie scene that gets me puddle-eyed is Forrest Gump’s scene by Jenny’s grave.

Yeah, me too. I couldn’t believe just how badly they ripped off Akira Kurosawa.

Talking about Kurosawa, the ending of Ran is heartbreaking. And I swear, I actually shed a few tears after seeing The Wild Bunch and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I also have watery eyes at the end of The Triplets of Belleville, but I think that’s mostly from laughing so hard at the final chase sequence.

Stranger

I’ve had male friends tell me they cried at “The Green Mile”.

Mr. Lissar started crying somewhere around when Gandalf rode into Minas Tirith in FotR, and then cried almost all the way through the other two movies. Well, not TTT so much, but certainly through RotK.

Oh, he cries during Hero, too. The death scene at the end.

If I haven’t seen The Rookie in a while, my eyes well up when Dennis Quaid is told by his minor league manager that he’s being called up to the Devil Rays.

For me, it’s when Forrest has held his speech while the microphone isn’t working and Jenny comes running across the water and Forrest runs to meet her and they embrace and thousands of hippies cheer.

Yeah, there’s a cruel irony: “You’re getting called up… to pitch for the Devil Rays.”

Actually I’d forgotten about that one. The scene that gets me is right after that, when he calls his son and says, “Your old man’s going to pitch in the majors!” I pretty much lost it at that point.

I asked my husband. He’s a stereotypical big, dumb guy. Manly man, etc.

His list:
The Champ
Bridges of Madison County (this one freaked me out a bit)
Forrest Gump (when Forrest meets his son)
Titanic
Lord of the Rings (the whole bowing thing, although he admits more)
Saving Private Ryan (As the old guy in the cemetary when asked if he had lived a good life)

I’ll throw this tidbit in here. The fact that he admits that any of them had any emotional impact on him whatsoever is an amazing feat in itself. Emotions are that which should be wadded up in a little ball and choked down.
