The Manuscript Found in Saragossa

Has anyone here seen, or even heard of, this 1965 Polish film?

I read a description of it last night in the Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, and my goddam mouth is watering. I have a copy of the novel someplace in the house…

Any opinions? Any reactions? Any tips on how to get hold of a video (175-minute director’s cut, please)?

%#*@&#?@$.!!!

You’d think, after all these years, I would remember to include the word “tits” in every thread title I start, to ensure proper viewing by the Teeming Millions.

Let’s see if this whets anyone’s appetite:

“Based on the fragmentary novel by Count Jan Potocki, this Polish film is a creepy, rambling account of the adventures of Alphonse van Worden in the haunted hills of Spain; every frame is replete with skulls and hanged men, a cabalist’s strange library or the bustle of a Spanish village; duels, amours, and intrigues, presided over by a sure smell of confusion and fear.”

The booking agent ( http://www.cowboybi.com/saragossa/main.htm ) says that Image Entertainment ( http://www.image-entertainment.com/ ) released it on video in June. I can’t find it on their site though. Maybe you could email them.

Sounds freaky, BTW.

:confused:

but where are the tits?

:confused:

Thank you, Shiva…Supposedly, Image should have released it on the 5th, but there’s no sign of it. I’ll dig around on the 'net some more, maybe phone up Kim’s Video in Greenwich Village, and post a review once I get my hands on it.

(Surreptitious bump, to catch the attention of any weekday Dopers who may have seen/heard of the film. Damn thread title; even Swimming Riddles’s “What Shoes Should I Buy to Be a Waitress?” is getting more hits. Did I mention there were two half-naked Islamic princesses in the movie? There are.)

Amazon is selling the director’s cut on video for $60 (not too unusual for somewhat obscure foreign titles)

I’ve heard of it of course, since its reputation continued to precede it long after the film became largely inaccessible. I think I was out of the country when this restored version made its rounds of the art/rep house circuits, so it should be pretty exciting to finally watch it (and re-watch, which I understand it truly demands) at home.

{sits blinking at the Amazon.com screen}

I swear to gawd that wasn’t up there on Saturday…Thank you, AG!

Kim’s Video on Bleecker Street has copies for rent, but not for sale…maybe I’ll check it out as a rental before investing.
