The Masked Singer

So, the last four competitors appeared last night. They were the Flower, the Eagle, the Penguin, and the Fox.
I think it’s become apparent that I’m going to suck at guessing who these folks are because I don’t know what’s hip and with-it these days. So without further ado, my best guess for the Flower is Niecy Nash. No reason, I would just like it to be true.
The Eagle I knew without a doubt was Howard Stern.
The Penguin…I want to say Britney Spears, though I don’t think the clues add up.
And the Fox, I got nothin’.
At the end of the show, the Eagle was unmasked to reveal Dr. Drew Pinsky, yet another person I have heard of while still managing to not know anything about. I still say it was Howard Stern!

P.S. - the second most annoying thing about this show is the moment where the person is being unmasked and pretends to have difficulty pulling their head off. Get some meddling kids and a Great Dane to help you already!

I finally caught up with this show after being quite obsessed with it last year. I still stand by the fact that I love the show because I like putting the puzzle pieces together to find out who the people are and not because the show is actually, you know, good.

I hit everyone last year almost 100% (with a little help) and this year I…have no idea who anyone could be. I can’t tell if that makes it more or less fun.

Regardless, I love watching it on DVR! Skip to the video package, hear them sing, skip to the next package, hear the faceoff, see the reveal, done.

I think the Flower is Patti LaBelle. Her voice has aged a bit (she is 75 after all) but to me sounds very distinctively Patti. She walked slowly and stood still while performing, which seems consistent with her being an older person. Also, the Flower was shown with a mixing bowl and Patti is known for her pies.

You nailed it!

I am so sick of Nicole’s fake crying.

I enjoy the hell out of this show. But I must admit, apart from the most recent reveal (Paul Shaffer), I’ve never heard of any of these people. In fact, most of the panel guesses are people I’ve never heard of.

So far, just for singing talent, there’s Black Widow and then…everyone else.

Again, with the voice, how could it not have been him?

My daughter, bless her heart, texted me: “You were right! But then again, so was Jenny…”
She’s out of my will.

The Fox…described as “this superhero”…is, I believe, Jeremy Renner, or possibly Robert Downy Junior.

I’d believe Renner over RDJ…I also think that’s a good guess.

The “T-Pain award for holy shit they’re really good” goes to thingamajig who is Victor Oladipo (basketball player)

I think Leopard is Jamie Foxx, but a friend of mine makes a very compelling argument for it being Seal

How can anyone NOT love a show where Laila Ali can be confused for Drew Carey??

I’m a notoriously bad guesser, I would have lost my shirt betting Peacock was Tom Jones last season. I was also convinced skeleton was Jim Belushi (second fiddle to John, sang with the new Blues Brothers, it was a no-brainer!).

I’ll add my guess for Black Widow being Lizzo. It was my guess as soon as I heard the “Good as hell” clue, plus, whoever it is has got serious athleticism for that body type. If flower is anyone but Patti, I’ll eat my hat. She seems to be the “gimme” this season. But then I’ve been wrong before…

You guys still hanging in there? T-Cups, I saw you post in the commercials thread last night and felt that you were watching TV with me.
So last night was two hours. We saw Rottweiler, Ladybug, Tree, Penguin, Flower, and Fox on the first show.

My guesses:

Tree = Wendy McClendon Covey

Penguin = Julia Louis Dreyfuss. And I was pretty damn certain, because she said something about The New Adventures of Old Penguin. I was watching for her to break out some of Elaine’s dance moves.

The Flower = Jackee`? Hey, last time I thought it was Niecy Nash. I like that guess better.

I don’t know who Rottweiler is but he’s a good singer.

At the end, Penguin was unmasked to reveal Sherri Shepard. Huh. Okay. She is famous.
Second show was The Black Widow, Thingamajig, The Butterfly, The Leopard and The Flamingo.

Sheesh. I’m not going to know any of these people with or without their costumes. It’s kind of interesting though, to hear these pop songs which I’m not familiar with. And we had the closed captioning on so I could check out the lyrics too.

At the end, The Black Widow was unmasked (good, I’m not digging her costume!) to reveal Raven-Symone. Hey, I do know who that is, though I haven’t really seen her since she was a little girl.
Y’all got any thoughts on this mess?

It’s probably Wayne Brady.

I enjoyed the show, but the two that were unmasked were another two people I had never heard of before. But I’m always impressed they can sing so well until all that crap. Part of me is suspicious that the actual singing performance, while indeed the person in the mask, was recorded earlier and they’re just wiggling around on the stage during the playback.

Holy fuck, how could you Dopers not have heard of these people? I’m in my mid fifties and I know who they are! You know what I think? Nobody is going to like this at all but-- it’s because they’re black, isn’t it?

They unmnasked two white guys earlier in the season, who I had no idea who they were either. Not Paul Shaffer–I knew that one. But some internet guy? And I forget the other one.

The two from last night it seems were on daytime TV. I don’t watch daytime TV. Or talk shows. Or Disney Channel. Or sitcoms. Or You Tube “influencers.” Or watch people play video games. The only radio I listen to is Classic Rock and wouldn’t know a hit from the last 25 years if it came up and bit me on the ass (a few exceptions, like a movie theme or something). And…well, why do I have to explain myself here?

I do know Sherri Shepard and Raven-Symone. But Sherri Shepard is a daytime talk show host, and I don’t see too much daytime TV during the week, being at work.

Then Raven-Symone is the little girl from the Cosby Show. I think she did some Disney Channel stuff, but I wasn’t the right age to watch those shows.

You’d be surprised how many white people I don’t know either.

Because I’m 72 and I quit listening to almost all pop music many years ago. I have no idea who most of those people are, nor do I know if they are black or white. And you’re right, that’s a poor statement to make.

Neither of these people are pop musicians. Which is the point of the show.

Perhaps a better way to have phrased it would have been to say you don’t know these people because you are not black. That way it doesn’t look as if I’m calling people who don’t know who Raven-Symone and Sherri Shepard are racists, which is not what I’m saying at all.

I’m pretty much out of touch with pop culture. I also don’t watch game shows, reality shows, talk shows, etc. I care nothing for flavor-of-the-week celebrities and have zero interest in people who are famous because they say they are. That eliminates a large segment of people who appear either on a show like the one being discussed (which I also don’t watch), or who are mentioned as a punch line by someone. I do know who Olidipo is, because I watch NBA games. Anyway, enough derailment.
