The Master's Golf Tournament

Is there any tournament in all of sports that is more full of itself than the Masters? No, there is no tournament in all of sports that is as full of itself as the Masters. It’s just a golf game. Get over it, Masters!

I think the guys who run it all have 2x4s stuck up their butts. They think they are God. They only sign 1 year TV deals so they can quickly fire CBS if they do anything wrong. The made CBS fire Gary McCord over 2 jokes he made a while back. The jokes were “greens are smooth like a bikini wax” and “looks like body bags buried there” Real controversial stuff!

It is an elite tournament and they can get away with it. Just sit back and enjoy it.

I was actually refering to the overwrought coverage of the tournament by CBS. I wish I had made that clear. But, the dramatic music, the historical references to past golfing “gods”, the near Christ-like worshiping of that incredible birdie putt from 50 yards out made by Ben who-gives-a-fuck Hogan. It’s a bunch of guys trying to put a small ball into a slightly bigger hole. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’ve golfed a bit and I know it’s hard, and in the end, all sports are ultimately silly, but CBS, stop trying to make it sound like winning the Masters is the ultimate in human acheivement.

So, two women are dissing their other friend’s choice of a boyfriend. One says to the other, “Could he be more boring?” The reply: “Yeah, he could golf.”

The one thing I’ve learned is that you either don’t care about golf or you really really really really really like golf. The Masters (indeed, all majors, but I think the Masters is the ultimate) is for the really really really really really golfers. It’s like the Super Bowl of golf. The fact that it’s played at a wonderful golf course and has a restricted field just adds to its allure. YMMV.

Moving thread from IMHO to The Game Room.

A woman at work thought I played golf - she said she thought all men played golf. I guess it’s a good way to kill 4 hours.

Augusta National is pompous and stuffy even by golf standards. The restrictions it has on what the broadcasters are allowed to say is ridiculous. They can’t refer to the galleries as “fans,” or even as “spectators,” they have to say, “patrons.” They can’t call it “the rough,” they have to say “second cut.” They can’t refer to the blue dye in Rae’s Creek. One broadcaster was fired for saying that the greens were so fast they looked like they’d been “bikini waxed.” I remember another broadcaster getting flak for referring to the fans as a “mob.”

They’re also elitist and exclusionary as hell. They didn’t allow black members until 1990. They still don’t allow women. Golf is pretty much a bullshit, preppie, pseudo-sport that takes itself way too seriously, and Augusta is the pinnacle of self-important golf snobbery. It is, after all, just a game invented by bored Scottish shepherds knocking rocks around with sticks.

They only allowed black members when the PGA tour required all their stops to be at clubs that allow anyone to join. (I know the Masters is not a PGA tour event)

Wimbledon can be quite close to what you describe.

As poorly as you might think of the Masters and those who run it - do a little reading on the subject and you might form an even lower opinion . . .

That Cliff Roberts sure impresses me as quite the SOB . . .

OTOH, pretty impresssive accomplishment of self promotion. Not a big sports fan/historian, but I wonder how many other private organizations retained such an iron grip on their event.

IMO, in large part it retains its position largely because it is the only major golf tournament that has been played at the same location. Gives that patch of ground a history no other place can cmpete with.

I always want Tiger Woods to win since if he does the founders must be spinning in their graves. I am sure they never thought a black guy could win there so many times.

Not to mention an Asian guy.

Or a South American guy.

Yes, though my jibe has to do with the fact Tiger is more Asian than he is black, conveniently forgotten by almost everyone.

Yes , his mother is Thai and his father is a mix of black/white/Cherokee. It’s also not well known he is Buddhist.
