The Meaning of 'Willie Nelson'

A friend of mine and I have an on going argument about the meaning of ‘Willie Nelson’ in the song ‘Bobcaygeon’ by The Tragically Hip. Here are the lyrics in question

'I left your house this morning
about a quarter after nine
coulda been the Willie Nelson
coulda been the wine
when I left your house this morning
it was a little after nine
it was in Bobcaygeon
I saw the constellations
reveal themselves
one star at a time ’
My friend (who I have to admit listens to a lot more T-Hip than I) tells me that ‘Willie Nelson’ is a code name for that wacky weed, marijuana. ‘Coulda been the marijuana, coulda been the wine.’ Now, I admit that this makes sense, but I always took it to mean that Willie Nelson music, along with the wine, made it possible to see the constellations for the first time.

Any ideas? Now, I think it is cool that Willie might be code for weed, he was in ‘Half Baked’ after all, but I like to think that his music is what the band was talking about, not marijuana.

Okay, Jabe, just so you don’t feel too unloved…

Well, I’m not familiar with the Tragically Hip, but I’ve never heard of the use of “Willie Nelson” as a code word for pot. (Though Willie is fond of the “kind”.)

I would assume that they meant “Willie Nelson’s music”.
The song appears to be about a guy leaving a person’s (I’m guessing a girl, but I don’t want to stereotype…) house in the morning because, presumably, he “got lucky” last night.

Now, in my experience, combining alcohol and pot is not a great idea if you want to get laid. It’s more conducive to sleeping (in the usual sense).

But wine and Willie…NOW you’re getting somewhere!

If they’d meant marijuana, why not just say that?

I vote for the music and wine gettin’ the job done…

I’m American, honey, our names don’t mean shit.

(I know this isn’t what you were after, but I got that quote in my head when I read the title and it just wouldn’t go away. :))

I know I am pathetic when even pity posts make me feel cool. Thank guys!

The REALLY not great combination might be from the lyrics to the Lowell George truck song, “I’m Willin’”:

… and if you give me weed, whites and wine
show me a sign,
and I’ll be willin’ …

The whites (white crosses - amphetamines) might counteract the effect you refer to, but I really hate to think about that combination. Particularly ingested by somebody operating a truck.
