Cognac is more of a type of brandy, but it’s not really the same as brandy. Brandy is pretty much any distillate of grapes. Cognac must come from the Cognac region of France and is made from specific varietals of grape. (And actually, the grapes that go into brandy and cognac you’d never want to make wine from.)
