Just a little additional ignorance fighting…Jack is almost a bourbon, the big difference is that Jack is charcoal filtered, something known as the Lincoln County Process. Take away the charcoal and Jack would technically be a bourbon but as it stands it’s a Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey.

Here is the Straight Dope on bourbon: It doens’t HAVE to be made in Kentucky, but most of it IS, so that’s where the confusion comes in. In order to be called “bourbon,” it has to meet specific criteria (and here I quote the Kentucky Encyclopedia:

, bourbon is made from a fermented mash containing at least fifty-one percent corn and lesser amounts of wheat, rye, and barley, along with yeast and distilled limestone water; it is distilled at no more than 160 proof and aged in charred oak barrels, a process that gives the bourbon its reddish color and unique taste.

Jack Daniel’s,which isn’t bourbon, says this on its web site:

Jack Daniel’s, is not considered a bourbon because it is charcoal-mellowed – slowly, drop by drop, filtered through sugar-maple charcoal – prior to aging, which many experts say gives it a different character. The process, called the Lincoln County Process, infuses a sweet and sooty character into the distillate as it removes impurities. But up to and after the charcoal filtering, the Jack Daniel’s production is much the same as any other Bourbon. Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel are two fine Tennessee Whiskeys though neither can be called bourbon.

Not sure why Hoopy was skittish about Knob Creek; it’s a Kentucky bourbon.

Okay, this is definitely not my forte! LOL While not a teetotaller (is that a word for real?), I only have a mixed drink occasionally (beer rarely); I don’t know brands very well either. So this is pretty much a crap shoot for me. Bottoms here I come gulp.

Not sure why Hoopy was skittish about Knob Creek; it’s a Kentucky bourbon.

I know its bourbon. It’s one of my favorites. I just knew that with the number of Jack Daniels responses, I couldn’t see anyone else putting Knob Creek. (Heck, I figured Maker’s would be more popular than Jim and was wrong on that.)

And I’m also feeling a bit ooky over all the people putting down Cognac brands for their brandy choices.
