The thread was far from civilized by the time catsix showed up on page two. However, I was still perfectly civil to her until she demanded two or three times that I prove a negative, then taunted me for failing to prove my case when I told her–twice–that definitively demonstrating a negative proposition was logically impossible.

I tend to stay out of gun control debates just because they fall under the general heading of “Politics, Religion and Redheaded Women,” and teaching pigs to sing has never been a fun passtime for me. However, even though I adamantly oppose any and all efforts at gun control, I do admire people on either side of the issue who stick to the facts as they understand them and argue with courtesy and reason.
Of course, there have been some threads http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=110419 that turn into gun control debates anyway, and to me the same rules apply, even if not to some others.
While I have nothing against -as some may be aware- a good fight, I would like to say that Ex-Tank single handedly raised my appreciation of the anti-Gun Control folks. I tend to think of myself as neutral on this matter and not well-enough informed to participate, but I do like posters who have solid logical facilities, an ability to engage the argument and integrate factual responses. Both do so well, and poor little stupid whinging illogical crybabies like catsix get caught in the crossfire, well, tough.
Let me echo catsix’s sentiments. I attempted to engage mg in a debate in this matter, and I believe that that thread was in GD, not the Pit. He refused to address my points, and then proceeded to go around to other threads in which I was participating and direct snippy comments at me. It seems to me that if minty green had a problem with my posting style, he should have discussed them in the original thread, or else started a thread devoted to that issue, instead of hijacking other threads to make oblique allusions to them. I still don’t know what prompted him to ignore me, and if he has any desire to see me refrain from the offending behavior, his strategy is a rather poor one.
Ryan, as you may be aware, many people have problems with your posting style, which often focuses on semantical nitpicking rather than substantive discussion of the issues. (Is SenorBeef your little brother, by any chance?) Nevertheless, I pretty much always make an effort to address substantive comments or questions in gun control threads where I am participating. That sometimes becomes difficult because your side tends to swarm whenever the subject arises, leaving me to respond to an almost impractical number of posts and posters. If you would provide a cite to show where I have failed to address your gun control concerns, I would be happy to do so now.

Hey Ryan, what the fuck are you talking about? Your name and my name appear together in only three GD threads over the last year, and only one of those threads is about guns. As you will note on pages 4 and 5, I specifically replied to your inquiries. I appear to have missed whatever questions you may have asked in your post on page 6, though I confess that I still don’t see any inquiry that asked for anything that hadn’t already been addressed in the same thread.
Take it easy, samclem. Though I honestly don’t know what he’s referring to here, I don’t see even an inference that Ryan accusing me of stalking him through the SDMB. Rather the oposite in fact–his claim is that I ignored his noble efforts to prove that firearms are the most important things in the world, or some such stuff. Anyway, I’m not offended, just intrigued as to what the heck he’s talking about.
This being the Pit: Jesus, Mary and Joseph! Is there no end to this? There are some topics that just open the front door for irrationality and self-absorption. There is about as much point to raising the gun control/Second Amendment topic here as there is for standing up for abortion at a Knights of Columbus meeting. The point of this thread was to complement Minty Green and Ex-Tank for conduction a rational discussion. I complement them, too. As far as the rest of the balderdash about who was snippy with whom, President Truman’s adage applies: if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Some days this place is like a remedial reading class for 12 year olds.
Asking someone to provide a cite that backs up a claim like “the founders specifically said x was not a reason for y” is not the same thing asking you to prove a negative minty.
