I’m new to this whole site, so I have no idea how much this will get answered or even looked at, but it’s worth a shot. I’m sure a good bit of you have heard the Barnaked Ladies song “One Week” off of their album “Stunt” that came out a couple years ago. If you read the lyrics in the CD booklet, there’s a line in the first verse that goes “Like Andrew Lloyd, I’ve got a big show/Mine’s about a Back-Hoe/There’ll be a big sound from the pavement.” Also, in the second verse, there’s a lyric that goes “Like Skywalker, gotta big hunch/Hey, that’s my lunch/Yoda’s a really, really old guy.” Niether of these lyrics is played on the radio or on the CD (naturally, since both versions are the same.) Does anyone know why?
My WAG would be that the order for the liner notes to be printed up occured during recording of the album. During that time, they felt the current version of the song was smoother or better. Heck, maybe since they decided to release it as a single, they needed to trim it down for radio airplay. If you look through napster or gnutella, you can likely find a live version with the added lyrics, as BNL are notorious for their playful live shows.
Of course, as a rabid Star Wars fan, I’m shocked and disappointed that they dissed Luke like that.
According to this thread at the www.barenaked.net bulletin board, Ed Robertson wrote the song, but didn’t include those parts when he recorded it. Steven Page submitted the lyrics for the liner notes, but he liked the parts Ed left out, so he included them anyway.
I’m doubtful that they ever performed the song with those lyrics. I have three different versions of “One Week” (the CD version, an acoustic version, and a cover medley version), and they’re lyrically the same as the radio edits.
