The Moneyball draft in retrospect

As anyone who can answer this question knows, the excellent book Moneyball details the 2002(?) MLB draft of the Oakland A’s. The A’s were among the first baseball teams rely on certain statistics to evaluate talent. Their early draft picks were unorthodox by the standards of the time.

It’s been five years since that draft. How are the picks that the A’s made doing relative to picks from other teams in that draft?

Here’s a relevant article from last year.

The A’s two top picks that year are on the roster, Nick Swisher and Joe Blanton. The Giants have their top four picks from that year on the roster: Matt Cain, Fred Lewis, Dan Ortmeier, and Kevin Correia. I’m not sure how good a comparison that is, but it’s something.

Interesting but some of the players could have been traded to other teams and performing well. It’s a good start though. Thanks.

If Jeremy Brown can’t get into the major leagues with the A’s catching being as bad as it is now, I guess he’s a flop.
