The Most Pointless, Unnecessary Movie Postscript Ever?

Yeah, Luthor. L-U-T-H-O-R. Not “E”. Lex Luthor. He’s got a huge underground secret labnoratory. Or he’s an evil tycoon, I forget which. And you didn’t heatr it from me. My name? It’s Wayne…Bruce Wayne. Yeah, just like the guy in Gotham.

You laugh, but Clark Kent, reporter, has been more successful in getting Luthor to do time than Superman has ever been.

Anyway, my propblem with the sene in Unbreakable was more that the written postscript was jarring in tone and pacing. crowmanyclouds has an interesting interpretation, but if he’s right, then the point deserved more examination.

In other words, if it was important, Shamalan should have shown it, rather than told us about it. If it wasn’t, then why did we need to know at all?

Also, I’ve always seen that film as Act I in a traditional superhero film. The Hero comes to be, beats a small villain, and learns who the real villain is. We’ll never see the later acts, but in my head, the confrontation against Mr. Glass is yet to come.

My guess is that Shamalan was uncomfortable with the last scene being the hero leaving the villain unpunished. I think he should have had enough faith in the audience to let us guess that a final showdown was coming.
