The most underrated movie

Much like the “most overrated movie” thread, this is one to share your most underrated movies. You can name more than one but please don’t draw a 10 point list.

If you could explain why it’s underrated, that’d be great.

The Blood of Heroes is the most under-rated sports movie ever.

A movie that seldom comes up in a discussion of great westerns is William Wellman’s “The Oxbow Incident”. Beautifully filmed in B&W in the 40s, it’s an indictment of mob mentality.

In the war drama genre, A Midnight Clear is rarely mentioned (except by me, in Christmas movie threads). It’s an excellent drama, based on the actual experience of a veteran of the Battle of The Bulge. It’s a study in compassion and human folly, and well-executed by excellent young actors, including Gary Sinise, Kevin Dillon and Peter Berg.

The Ice Harvest is a darkly funny dramedy with John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton. I saw this by accident when channel surfing and liked it a lot. I don’t even know if it got much theater play, but it’s very well done.

Sullivan’s Travels.

Yes, some critics agree that it was Sturges’s masterpiece.

BUT, I never see it appear on modern cognoscenti’s 10, 20,…,50 Best List. At least the AFI put it on their list.

Timeless commentary on the following themes…

  1. The rich celebrities going to live with the poor–with their entourages and luxuries–and publicized by their PR men.
  2. Light-and-airy-film stars deciding that they must do SERIOUS FILMS.
  3. A very sharp commentary about SERIOUS FILMS.

Best film about the film business, ever.

My usual answer when people ask me this is Frailty, with Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey. A good, spooky movie that doesn’t rely on special effects to be entertaining.

Titanic, Forest Gump, The English Patient and Avatar. I just don’t understand why more people don’t like them!

I just wish people had given E.T. more of a chance.

This movie came and went without notice, but I loved it

And Rushmore. Ebert went crazy that Bill Murray did not get an Oscar nomination, but most critics were pretty blah.

Ang Lee made a civil war movie called Ride with the Devil, that I thought was pretty good. It didn’t get any publicity and appears to have been forgotten.

I thought John Carter was enjoyable action adventure.

*History Of The World Part I.

As if Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs were the only funny movies Mel Brooks ever made…

“We are so poor we do not even have a language…just this stupid accent!”
“She’s right, she’s right! We all talk like Maurice Chevalier!”

I think Fantasia 2000 is fantastic, better than the original overall, but it’s rarely mentioned these days, and usually dismissed.

Stuart Saves His Family was one of the best SNL skit adaptions ever, IMO. Full of laughs.

Joe

Love The Ice Harvest; it’s actually in my Christmas movie routine (it’s not a “Christmas Movie” per se, but it takes place during that season).

Another good, creepy movie that doesn’t seem to get much attention is Brad Anderson’s Session 9. One of the creepiest closing lines I’ve heard.
